Drove my wife into work in her new Prii & then off to work on my side of town this AM Had a lady almost hit me from behind when she went around me in a SUV, then she cut me off as she swerved back in front of me.. all that to get in the left turn lane... as she had to stop 3 cars back & wait for traffic as I passed her.. <sigh> Brilliant. I'm thinking we need a bumper sticker for these less intelligent life forms.. In the mean time, a casual hand gesture gets the point across, but I hate doing that.. (sorry)
The Force is strong with this one. ... The Force has a "Dark side", which feeds off emotions such as anger...
I am currently driving a Honda Fit. But I'm sure the psychology I tend to encounter is similar to those driving a Prius. And what I have found? Is that people assume you are driving slow. The Fit, despite being sub-compact hatchback, and having a 4 cylinder engine, is capable of reaching and maintaining speeds easily exceeding speed limits. What I have found different than any sedan or vehicle I have ever previously owned, is the agressive, almost angry passing of my vehicle. It truly is like regardless of what speed you are actually going, or the speed of surrounding traffic, people come up behind me and assume I'm going slow based on the fact that they see a small vehicle with a hatch. Then even if it means considerable risk to themselves, and pushing their vehicle to WARP speed, they will pass me... I know my driving hasn't changed. And I don't remember this ever happening until I started driving a small hatch-back. I'd speculate that it's the same when people see a Prius. The accepted mythology is that they are ALWAYS driven slow. And of course not capable of high speeds due to the being powered by a windable main spring, aided by a 8000 dollar battery that will fail in 3 years.... I'm simply afraid it's the nature of the beast..
I have also noticed people seem to drive more aggressively around me now that I have a prius. I was almost wondering if the speed monitor on the dash was off. Plugged in my GPS and nope I am doing what the dash says I am. People just seem to love my bumper so much they have to get close enough to hug it.
Thanks, that's pretty awesome and I would speculate it to be the case here as well.. the interesting thing with the Prius (and our friends FFH) is that they're so quiet.. and it seems like you're hardly moving till you look down at the speedo & see you're doing say 35mph (in say an 25mph zone!!) so, we tend to be more cautious and aware of our speed more than we used to be before... As for the other drivers and warp speed... it becomes increasingly more obvious of just how rude people can be... especially as we close in on this Holiday Season.. so far at just ~650 miles.. my wife's reported (to me) several near misses (and being cut off) of her new car on the freeway already.. & more often than not it's been a SUV, Pickup Truck or MiniVan... really wish they would crack down on these aggressive drivers as it seems they are the cause of so many accidents... Yea, the people they leave wrecked behind them since they don't seem to have a clue, nor do they tend to care.. or so it appears anyway.. btw, we did consider the Fit in our quest as well.. we've heard it's a great performer.. but lacking the sunroof option, which was seriously high on her list of requirements.. (even leaving out the Volt, she really liked otherwise) Thanks for your post..
Such a bumper sticker would likely just encourage the idiots. Had an extremely lifted pickup bumper rush me on the highway a few nights back. I wasn't passing the semi truck as fast as he wanted to pass, so I had headlights boring into my skill via the rear-view mirror. Then he backed off, I passed the truck and pulled back to the right lane. Dude stayed back. Didn't anger pass me or anything. Miles later he finally crept past, barely faster than me. It was just weird. Now if I had a "Get off my A**" bumper sticker maybe he'd have taken that rifle off the rack in back... - D
I want to develop an arm that would reach out, and since the butthead is so close he would not notice it, that would stick a M-80 in the grill of the the SUV that's up yer butt!... Time delay, he drives away, BOOM! Well I can dream can't I!
Thanks for your note.. I guess we'll have to get used to all this LOVE now egh?? lol I've had them do the same thing to us on the Harley... they get so close you could almost reach back and slap them... amazing.. but remarkably scary thinking they'll ride right up that close to someone.. Sometimes I think our Old English Sheepdog could drive better than some of these folks.. She's a little crazy, but at least a bit more considerate.. lol
AWESOME.. when you release a product like that to market.. let me know as we would be interested in such an option.. Almost like a James Bond Prius..
Hey Electric !! What kind of real world mileage do you get with your Fit ? I'm not talking 'best case' .... say an average of the last 20K miles. Thanks REV
In the best of summer, early fall..moderate weather, I get almost exactly the advertised EPA. About 28 city, 32 Highway and a mix that hovers around 29-30 mpg. So far in the coldest of winter...right now...I lose about 4 mpg. My overall average drops to 24-25 mpg. I have an automatic, some Fit owners make amazing hybrid like claims? I don't know. I'm not unhappy with the MPG, most of the year it's exactly as advertised. If I make the jump to a Prius c? It will primarily be because the MPG should be almost double that of The Fit. It's a tough choice from the P.O.V. that from a layout and "fun" factor? The Fit is one of the best automobiles I've ever owned. I've been wanting a Hybrid for years now, but I know I will miss The Fit when I get one. For a subcompact it is very well designed.
I think placing a bumper sticker like that on your car would only cause you more harassment from the multitude of morons driving around.
I'm sure you're probably right about that Silver Bullet.. I feel better knowing we're not the only ones to have this observation after just 1 month of ownership..
WHAT.....?? Prince William had one of those on his honeymoon ride!! what are you saying?? I thought it stood for LEARNER...as in student driver. Maybe he fired his chaffeur? Of course it was a two-seater...
If you drive at the same speed or faster than everyone else, you don't need "Get off my nice person" bumper sticker. I never have problems as I usually drive more aggressively than others, taking shortcuts, etc.
