Stealth install an aftermarket stereo in Prius

    Thanks for the support Justin and Ryan. Never done something like this. I will post photo if I can figure out how to do that now.
    Oh- and I got the penny my daughter put in the old CD player. Going to have to make her a necklace out of it.

    If you have a good picture of putting the harness together I'll add it to my first post. I'll also add something about the second plugin issue. I thought it was a fluke but since it happened to you it could happen to others.

    Nice!!!! Awesome that you got it to work after all. I'm having some problems with my Sirius tuner, so I think I'm going to get a new stereo and Sirius box in November. If I do, I'm going to try to hook up the steering wheel controls, which I remember you asking about. I'll post what happens...I think there's another topic on this board about how to hook it up properly. Great job though!

    Thanks for this wonderful thread & instructions. After many months of investigating and pondering cheap options to play mp3s from USB (music & books/lectures) and AUX for my iPhone/iPod (music), went with Boss 612UA mechless that Fry's had on sell for $30 [I would not recommend this unit for anyone other than the tight-budget mildly techno geek]. Nice plus is that it also takes SD cards. Other than the limitation that Boss plays mp3 in the order written to the device, not alphanumeric like the rest of the planet, the only problem was the unit does not have standard screw mounts...in fact no screw mounts. Looked inside and figured where I could safely drill through the sides. Works great. Total time: 1 hr harness wiring, 1 hr dismantling/assembling the car, and 1 hr drilling/mounting the radio.

    I just wanted to first say a big "thanks!" for this wonderful thread :)

    After looking through the posts and tutorials, I was wondering if it would be possible to keep both the factory headunit and aftermarket headunit working?

    From what I understand, the BHO-1761 is used to keep power to the factory headunit to prevent the orange triangle/mfd errors... so the only thing not connected to the factory headunit (after following the steps of the tutorial) are the speaker cables? So if we used the rest of the BHO-1761 connectors with the harness, wouldn't it be possible to have both headunits working and sharing the speakers?

    Sorry if this sounds like a dumb questions... going to work on this over the thanksgiving weekend, and just wanted to see if this was possible.

    You would have issues with power feeding into the speaker outputs on the stereo that is not being used. You would need to use some kind of switch so you could isolate the speaker outputs such that one of the units is disconnected while the other is in use.

    I 'mnot sure why you would want to keep the factory unit operational though. Choose a good aftermarket unit and you'll never want to use the factory one ever again. :)

    Wanted to say thanks to FL8 helping me through private messages, but have a issue.

    Hi all I have a 2005 prius and I have the jbl radio. I did the stealth install and I ordered the metra 71-1761 87-94 toyota harness and the metra 70-1761 radio harness for toy 87-up not knowing they would not work with the jbl. I had to order the metra TYTO-01 JBL amplifier interface harness. It works great, I plan on added the other harness so I can use my volume up etc on the steering wheel. My problem is I would like to still have the stock radio able to be hooked up. Can anybody steer me in the right direction on what harnesses I need? I usually order on Amazon.com so if you might be able to send me the links that would be great. Thanks in advance.

    Thanks, Justin... I guess there's no real need for the factory headunit once I get my new one up and running :)

    So I've just started with wiring the harness... most of it is pretty clear, but there are 3 wires that I'm wondering if need be connected. I tried looking on the pictures you posted and the youtube slide video, but I couldn't quite make out some of the connections.

    The wires in question are:
    Blue - Auto antenna lead
    Blue/White - Amplifier turn-on lead
    Orange/White -Illumination lead
    NOTE: they're the bottom 3 wires in the attached picture

    Should I connect these to the harness/BHO-1761? Or should I just terminate them?

    Hi Bill,

    I did not connect the blue auto antenna or the blue/white amp turn on. If your radio supports the illumination/dimming with the headlights on, then there should be an equivalent wire to connect that to, but if not, then you can terminate it.

    Hi Bill!

    The wires in question only need to be connected on the BHA harness to the aftermarket stereo. You can even skip the power antenna and amplifer turn on leads and just connect the illumination wires. The BHO harness (that plugs into the oem stereo) only needs power, ground and 12v ignition to function. All of the extra wires on the BHO harness should be left unconnected and tapped up.

    Wanted to say thanks F8L. If you hadn't posted those pictures I never would have thought to do it. It turned out great and took 15 minutes to toss the radio in thanks to your videos. The only change I made was using the pre-amp out from my JVC KD-R810 and ran that into the Aux port via a 3.5mm cable that I had previously run under the carpet.

    Neat little trick using the AUX input. Do you get noise with both units on? I wouldn't recommend this method when using a high quality aftermarket stereo because you will degrade the sound when going through the factory stereo. It's sort of like pouring distilled water through a screen filled with mud. With a cheaper unit you may not notice the difference and the wiring is much simplified. Thanks for this tip. :)

    Questions. In this stealth mode setup, do the volume controls on the steering wheel control the new stealth radio?

    Is basically the original unit non functional? That seems ok, but I just wanted to be sure.
