Help - I received notice of the SSC 50P campaign (for engine stall problem). But in May '05 I had TSB EG047-04 applied for the same problem. Wondering if they were the same ECM reprogramming I called Toyota at the number listed in the SSC notice [ (888) 270-9371 ]. The person I talked with said the reprogramming was the same so it didn't need reapplication (but the dielectric grease needed to be applied because it wasn't part of the TSB).

So I called the dealer to schedule, and they said the ECM needs reprogramming. When I called them on it, they backed off, saying "Well, you may be right, we'll look into it." FYI, this dealer is less than credible in my mind - they can't even change oil without overfilling, even when I warn them of past (mal) performance.

    My questions:

    1. Anyone know if the TSB and SSC reprogramming are the same or different?

    2. Anyone know a Toyota number where a definitive answer can be obtained? The person I spoke to on the 888 line was not real convincing.

    3. Anyone know if there's any harm in re-applying the ECM reprogramming if it turns out to be the same as what's already been applied via the TSB?

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Hi markl_me

I suggest you search the forum on, say, "50P" A few re-programming attempts have resulted in damaged ECMs - rare, but much trouble when it happens. Seems the scanners used by the dealers received faulty software early on. Take a look at "RECALL GONE BAD" in this forum.

I have chosen to defer the re-programming until my dealer has successfully done several. I believe you will need the SSC 50P in addition to the previous programming.

The reprograms are probably different. As I recall the EG047-04 was for a problem where the ICE failed to start and SSC 50P is for a running ICE stalling.

    jfschultz -

I believe you are incorrect re: EG047-04 was for ICE failing to start. There was much discussion here and in Yahoo group Prius 2-G late last year and early this on stalling Prii. I know - my Prius stalled on my wife, and fortunately I had been keeping up and knew it was not serious. She restarted the Prius with little/no problem and continued running her errands that day.

When I called the dealer seeking the EG047-04 because of the stall, they said (correctly) that it would depend on the error codes in the computer(s). When I got the car back, they said I was right - EG047-04 flash reprogram was needed.

Information like this *should* be readily available from Toyota,
but this is one of the areas where they're astoundingly balky and
given to obfuscation and "just trust us"ism. Why the hell shouldn't
I be able to know the exact rev of their code that I'm running
in my ECUs, and where's the changelog I can read to determine if
I really need a given set of fixes or not? Arrrgh. If they'd only
provide that then you'd immediately know if SSC50P == EG047-04.
