Hi guys and gals. I purchased my 2005 Prius new from our local dealer, but got my extended warranty from a dealer in California for considerably less than the dealer's offering. That system worked great and although I only used it once in the 6.5 years I've owned my car it was worth it! I'm now thinking of my next Prius and I'm wondering if that warranty deal is still available. I don't see any reference to it in recent posts??? Any comments would be appreciated.
I am interested to know how much you paid for your warranty and how much it covered your trouble. Since in general I am not a fan of any extended warranties, because I believe they are overpriced. Plus there are always ways to reduce the cost of repair without warranty.
What repair did you have that made the >$1000+ extended warranty worthwhile? I do not believe that extended warranties are worth it in the long run. However, if you must have one, it will usually be cheaper if NOT purchased at the point of sale. Allen, Back in 2005 I believe I paid around $725 (not sure of exact amount) for a 7 year, 75,000 extended warranty. My problem was a water pump that went out and was replaced under that warranty. And while I probably would have paid a little less for that repair than I paid for the warranty, my main concern was air conditioning (essential here in SW Florida) and having to replace the NiMH battery. I appreciate the fact that the car is extremely reliable and most are happy to take a chance on these two very expensive repair/replacement situations, but I for one am not willing to take that risk. Different strokes,... Thanks for writing.
