I bought the car from carmax. I have until monday to return it under their 5 day buyback program. I could return it and grab another prius with similar miles. What is the likelihood a different prius won't have this problem?

How many miles on this prius? There are TSBs out there that might address the issue. Depends on whether you want to deal with it or not.

    Most don't have this noise.
It's normal to hear buzzing, pumping sounds, pressure building/releasing noises.

If you saying the cars brakes sound like a dog barking something is wrong, and i would give it back to them, cause a repair in the future could be thousands and thousands of dollars.

I would think there is something wrong with cars that get traded into carmax. They pay such a low price no person would want to sell their car to them unless it needed a work or they couldn't afford it. Back in 09 my car was about 6 months old, had 16,000 miles on it and they would pay around 7-10 grand less than bluebook.

Thanks for the replies so far. I read up about the noise before I posted this thread. I've had the car for 2 days so far and heard it "bark" more than once per day. It does happen rarely under normal use. I was able to repeat the noise with the car off and parked in my garage though. There are only 14k miles on it.

My current solution is to have them bring a prius with 16k miles to the store closest to me. I'll take a look at that one and go from there I guess.

If the car only has 14K miles, make it to a Toyota dealer for a warranty repair. Ba-da-bing! Problem solved.

However, the Prius has a brake lock feature, which is designed to help you start on hills. You engage it by depressing the pedal all the way to the floor, there will be a light click and a yellow indicator will light on the dash. When you next roll forward, the brakes will stay engaged for a few feet. I used to do this with my handbrake when starting uphill on a manual transmission car. This may be what you're experiencing, it's easy enough for you to try and see if the defect you're experiencing is really a feature. If I'm wrong, sorry, just trying to help.

I caught my Prius making noises the other day.

At first, I couldn't figure out what the heck it was but I put my ear down to the ground around the rear and it was coming from there.

I'm pretty sure it's normal venting or whatnot. It's not the same noise as when you open the driver's door and it builds up pressure.

This noise lasts a good 5 - 10 minutes. Long enough I went inside to grab my phone to record the noise.

^^ Was this about 5 hours after the car was run? That is when the emissions control system does some venting.

Presumably you did a VIN check (such as CarFax) so you know it hasn't been in a serious accident?

Since it is a 2011 with only 14K miles on it take it to a dealer as suggested by Rebound. While you are there have them switch the warranty to your name.

It's really hard to diagnose anything from a written description of a sound. Could be almost anything from the brake pedal hitting something under the dash to a bad master cylinder or accumulator.
