First, an apology if this thread already exists for 2010 models. I spent half an hour looking and couldn't find it, so here I am. My touch screen failed completely this week. It's still under warranty, so I know I can take it to the dealer. I think in an earlier model year thread, I read that this is usually a soldering problem. What I would like to know (on the 2010-2011 model) is if I have it fixed, is it likely to fail again or does this repair usually last? If it's likely to go out again, I'll buy an extended warranty before I hit 36,000 miles. By the way, I didn't attach a suction cup, or carry a table, or hit it, or loan it to a friend (see, I really did search through previous forums). Thanks for your help!

The Gen III uses an entirely different touch screen. Previous information about the Gen II MFD does not apply to the Gen III.

I didn't want to get blasted for failing to find my question had already been answered infinitum in some other thread. So after doing a search with key words like "Touch screen broken" and "touchscreen broken", "not working" etc, I went through all 37 pages of the gen III mechanical problems forum and didn't find anybody who has the same problem.

When I press AM or FM, mine displays the radio stations, yet I can no longer change the stations, or using NAV, I can no longer enter addresses either. Hard to believe I am the ONLY one with a 2010 gen III whose touch screen has failed, Well, I will report back after I see the dealer. BTW, I have 27,000 miles on the car and up to this point, it's been problem free. No maintenance other than oil changes and tire rotations.

You are not the only one but the number of Gen III Nav failures reported on here have been few and far between. In all of the cases that I remember the dealer replaced the Nav unit and this took care of the problems.

Let us know how your problem works out.

When you take it in the dealer's service people will almost certainly replace the entire Nav unit. Try to get them to put in a new one vice a "reconditioned" one. I remember from some older posts they were trying to use reconditioned electronic units for a while, I hope they have stopped doing that. The reconditioned units frequently fail again because they are not really fixed.

Is it likely to fail again? I don't think there have been a lot of Nav System failures but there is just no way to tell. If you get a new unit odds are in your favor. If they do put in a different Nav unit ask them if the warranty starts over again on that unit.

An Extended warranty is a matter of personal choice. If you want one get it through this site, you won't find a better price on a Toyota warranty anywhere. Most of the time extended warranties are a waste of money but in some circumstances they makes good sense.

I am on my third NAV unit, all replaced under warranty, but what a pain! The unit is truly awful. Now the touch screen requires a great deal of pressure to get it to respond. I do have the extended warranty, and think that I will be using it several times for the continuing replacement of the NAV unit.

Why should we believe you given that you think the regenerative brakes are "defective"?

I have to admit, the nav unit isn't my favorite thing on the car (and I LOVE my Prius). The voice recognition is such a joke. As an experiment today, I said "gasoline" to which it responded, "cancel". I then tried "gas" and it said "turn list mode". As I've explained earlier, it doesn't understand "Mom" or "Mother" for bluetooth calling either. And numerous earlier posts have talked about the necessity of using a workaround to be able to enter info while the car is moving. I live near Universal Studios and that isn't even in the POI's! By the way, a little tip I've learned is that you can say, "I'm hungry" or "I need gas" to get those icons displayed. But I digress (sorry).

Anyway, my plan is to go to the dealer, push for a new one, then buy the plug and play option to use buttons while the car is in motion. I guess I will ask what the nav unit WOULD have cost if it were not under warrantee, to decide if I should buy the extended one (here). BTW, When I bought the car and they tried to sell me the extended warrantee, the dealer pointed out that "touch screens are prone to problems", to which I thought, then why don't you guys build a better one?

Well the dealer refused to replace the nav screen with a new one. Said it's Toyota's policy to use reconditioned ones, just as they do when they replace a faulty alternator. The dealer is the North Hollywood CA one, by the way. When I tried to enter an address into the replacement screen, it said it "didn't exist". Turns out the gps they gave me was still set to the east coast! Guess I may be buying an extended warrantee afterall! (here of course)

I just posted my similar issue in this forum last week.

My Radio/Nav unit failed completely at 36.5k. The screen is black and no features are operable. The lights on the buttons of the unit work and you can hear the Nav DVD spin at start up. Also, if you push the eject button upon start up the unit will attempt to eject my CDs. But the touch screen is black and completely inoperable.

There were "issues" prior to this at 27K but nothing that didn't self resolve and the Toyota rep that I talked to about it at my last oil change did not note my file. Now it's iffy whether Toyota will cover replacement of this unit. I was quoted about $2.8K to fix, and today I called and found out that is with a refurb unit! I've been waiting two weeks.

Even if Toyota covers the replacement of the unit - now I'm concerned I'm going to be forced to get a refurb unit that will ultimately fail like the current one. Hmmmm.........

Oh and I wish I could have bought the extended warranty! I didn't even know that was an option for me because I purchased the vehicle from a private party. Ironically, I received the notice from my local dealership about the possibility to purchase an extended warranty AFTER it was too late =(

I can't speak to the vocabulary on changes on the Gen 3's nav system but on the Gen 2, saying "gas station" will bring up gas stations. I'm hungry is a carryover from Gen 2.

(I had won a one week test drive of a 2010 Lexus HS 250h and it had a newer gen nav system than mine Gen 2 so what it expected was a bit different. IIRC, it wanted action verbs, so instead of gas station, you had to say show gas stations.)

Have you tried command lists like http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii-2010-prius-technical-discussion/65925-list-voice-commands-2.html#post1109672 ?

I agree an extended warranty for those of us with ATP or even just the Nav unit is a very good idea, sorry you missed out.

If you have to replace the unit out of your own pocket you might want to consider an aftermarket nav/audio system, it would be cheaper and probably a lot better than the Toyota unit.

Look for threads such as these two in the Audio & Electronics Forum:
