As a Prius Plugin priority registrant I am a Toyota owners member. This gives me/us access to all the manuals and other tech data. I am looking through the 2012 Prius V manual as I right this. Vehicle proximity notification system When driving with the gasoline engine stopped, a sound, which changes in accordance with the driving speed, will be played in order to warn people nearby of the vehicle’s approach. The sound will stop when the vehicle speed exceeds approximately 15 mph (25 km/h).
All 2012 Priius models will have this 'noisemaker': http://priuschat.com/forums/prius-h...coming-standard-in-all-2012-prius-models.html It's not as bad sounding as many may think it will be. Does it need to be there? No, but it is... Once we start getting 2012's in our garages, it'll only be a short matter of time until many begin getting disconnected lol.
Does it say anything about when the car is stopped and idling? The video in the thread about the "noisemaker" showed a car that barely came to a stop so it's hard to tell. I really hope that there isn't a sound when the car isn't moving but I suspect I'm hoping for too much!
If the car is moving less than 15mph and the ICE is off it will make noise. The other entry on this subject is: "Vehicle proximity notification system In the following cases, the vehicle proximity notification system may be difficult for surrounding people to hear. ●In very noisy areas ●In the wind or the rain Also, as the vehicle proximity notification system is installed on the front of the vehicle, it may be more difficult to hear from the rear of the vehicle compared to the front."
