Toyota says never. But you need to check it i want to say every 30k but i'm not sure it's in the manual. People on here say every 30k or 50k or 20k it depends who you talk to.

CHANGE the transaxle fluid its not hard but did mine to late to save the tranny.
It is definitely not a sealed lifetime transaxle should do every 60,000 I would say now that mine is dead

On my Gen3 I have changed transaxle fluid twice, 20K and again at 50K. Used oil analysis from both are posted here: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...ng/72896-diy-transmission-fluid-change-7.html

First sample at 20K had a lot of silicone, probably left over from the casting process. The second contained a lot of aluminum, I don't know where that is coming from. If I find out I will let everyone know.

From what I see in my samples and others that have had transaxle UOAs done I will continue to change at 30K intervals. Although I may change a little sooner next time because of the aluminum.

My DIY procedure with pictures by Z2R JDM is post #55 of the above thread. Anyone who can change their own engine oil should be able to do this also. A word of caution, be sure to use Toyota ATF-WS fluid because we don't know the electrical characteristics of other fluids.

Note: Unfortunately "lifetime fluid" usually means the lifetime of the warranty not the lifetime of the car.

Isn't the trans case the only thing that's aluminum?

I am not sure, if so it probably means I contaminated the sample with the drain or fill plug or their washers. But there may be some aluminum components in MG1 and MG2 or the planet gear carrier, etc. I will probably send in another sample next summer. I may try to get a sample out of the fill plug hole, I think I can suck out some fluid out with my syphon pump, or even a turkey baster, so I won't have to change it again so soon.

At what mileage did your trans die? I saw your earlier post where you have 190,000 miles so far.

If it were me, I would change at 30, 90, 150, ... Most virgin fluid I have seen is the color of clotted blood, redish-black, after 60,000 miles. Unfortunately, I do not buy new cars, so the first change is when I take possession and then every 60,000 thereafter.

If you do not change your fluid, set your expectation to 200,000 miles.

There should be nothing aluminum to wear in the transmission/MGs.

brand new to the forum. Bought my Gen 3 2011 Prius on April 19, 2011. Will hit 58000 miles within a week. Just extremely satisfied with it so far. Most enjoyable car I've ever owned, ... and I've owned a number over my 58 years. Not one issue yet, other than those caused by me, or others, .. ie, rock to the windshield, tire treads on the highway, etc. Original tires still not looking too bad, not much brake wear yet. Plan on putting over 100,000 a year, and hoping it can make it for four or five years. Lots of miles, but I'm an easy driver, with a gentle braking and acceleration foot. Staying on top of scheduled services.

That is a bunch of miles SilverDan. What type of MPG's are you seeing? Is your car used for work or are you driving laps around the US for fun?

My 2010 Three lunched its traction battery...at 305,538. It's been sold to a mechanic to rebuild and replaced with a 2017 Three. Amazing vehicle!

Geesh, it took it's sweet time dying. I guess it's not exclusively miles that kill them, time's a factor too.

Our's is barely broken in: 67K km's, roughly 42K miles. Still on original air filters, wiper blades, tires and so on.

We have 185,555 miles on our 2010 as of last night:).

While not as high as some on this thread, still a good amount and trouble free(y).
