I'm also in the Chicago area, and have a short commute (2.9 miles), I average 49 mpg (lifetime, computed), with some work.

In the winter I can drop to the upper 30's (I had 36 one time, but that was when the coolant pump was giving problems. That was fixed under a Toyota Service Bulletin, and since then my cold-weather mileage improved). In the summers I get low 50's to mid 50's (depending on how much bike riding I do for the commute, saving the Prius for longer trips). I added an engine block heater, and that added a few mpg to my winter rates, I don't think I dropped below 40 mpg on a tank last winter. I tend to avoid using A/C and heat (unless the defrost is needed), since it takes a couple miles before you really notice the difference anyway, and by then I'm nearly home.

I also have a scanguage, so I know when I can truly glide, and my commute is on roads that are generally 30 mph and uncrowded (I usually avoid the 45 mph road, if I get there in 6 minutes vs. 7 minutes it's not a big deal to me). I grill block in the winter, and I have my tires at 40/38. I recently got Michelin Energy Saver A/S tires, that might've added 1 or 2 mpg.

With 27,085 miles on my 2008 Prius 2, I have averaged 46.18 MPG since I purchased the car new in September 2007. That reflects general around-town trips here in Southern California that probably average no more than 3 - 4 miles, with a couple of trips a year to Ashland in Southern Oregon, carrying 2 people plus luggage. This usually averaging 1700 miles round trip each time. My highest tank mileage was 504, which required 10.81 USG to refill.
Thus some 50% of my annual mileage is the short trip variety, where the ICE never achieves a stable operating temperature. So average mileage results. I no longer try to maximize MPG readings on any trip, and on the longer hauls I usually set the CC at 72 - 75 MPH.

    Still a joy to drive.

Bought my Gen2 T-Spirit (UK) yesterday, and have managed 62mpg(UK) - approx 50mpg(US) so far, mainly out-of town constant 60mph (approx) speeds.

I've "got" the pulse and glide, but find the accelerator too sensitive at higher speeds - it's either in regen, or electric "warp stealth" at approx 50mph +

Below that speed - eg.. below 40ish, P&G is fairly easily done as the pedal seems less sensitive.. I know it's all computer programming, but that's the best way I can describe it.

There's 90,000 miles on the clock, 2007 model, newbie driver, but used to getting good mpg from diesels :)

Puckdrop look forward to high 60's when the weather warms up next year. I would suggest blocking the front grill with foam pipe insulation, just leave one slot open in front of the inverter cooler this will help economy and help with interior heating.

Not even used a tank, so may get better, but so far 6 liter/100km = 39mpg US.

It's the same as my motorcycle.

I hope to do better. At first I thought the meter was off:
    - the first bar from the fuel gauge turned off after 112km (indicating a 1120km or 700mile range)
    - the second went after 220km (140M)
    - the third after 300km or so (~185M)
    - and now the 4th is off after 330km (205M, indicating 500 mile range).

But if they keep disappearing faster and faster...

When I bought it, the display read 5.4/100km (43.5mpg), so that's my goal for the next 5 fill-ups.

I'm a Prius newbie, so I'm still learning techniques, etc. My first tank was around 52 (my three year old daughter hit the reset button on my mileage!), my second was 52.7, and the third tank was 56.7. I think the improvement was because we've had a little run of warmer weather here (North Carolina), and I'm also getting better at accelerating. I was getting up to speed too slowly, I think. Thanks to some advice on this forum, I'm doing better now. :D

I try to keep my finger off of reset - I push that puppy every 10K - based on my current 5K or so - I'm at 47.3mpg w/ no heroic measures to up the mpgs. I enjoy watching the "true-to-life" average over long stretches. I can't stand to watch the mpgs on the MFD flying up & down every time I accelerate or coast.

Has anyone else ever had the mileage part of the guage reset itself after a fill up? I swear I didn't hit the reset button (in fact, almost certain, because only teh mileage went to 0, teh avg mpg number stayed). Is this normal (have a "new to me" 2009 with 77k miles).

    Yup.
    My 06 does this sometimes.
    I don't know why though.

With the 2004/2005 (and 2006?) models the whole MPG thing, both miles and MPG, resets each time you fill.

With later models the MPG doesn't automatically reset. This is to give people the option of recording tank MPG (by manually resetting) or measuring lifetime MPG if they don't manually reset.

Thanks folks. Guess I should decide the path to follow shortly. Only two fillups so far, and I really only went a handfull of miles by your standards. I did notice the fuel tank wonkiness I've read elsewhere. 2.3 gal first try, 5.4 the second, but basically down 3 bars both times. I guess you really do need to watch the computed mpg because you can never be sure you've ever filled the tank...

Mine doesn't do this everytime, just whenever it feels like it, it seems.
And it's only the distance that resets in the MFD, not the trip odometer.

Reset the MFD on my 2008 every 10K miles - No heroics - No hypermiling - 47MPG - and yes, completely normal for tank miles to reset, but avg continues.

because of the non LLR tires cooper CS4's I suffer a little on mpg. I get around 45 give or take for the very short trips I now make. Usually less than 5 miles each way. I almost never get any longer trips. The wife borrowed mine to go see her mother and got it up to 48 doing 50mph or higher on a hwy.

route 2 elevation profile.jpg route 1 elevation profile.jpg 070812 dee why to rouse hill.jpg 070812 rouse hill to dee why.jpg Just sharing my morning and evening commute elevation profile (first two photos) which I tackle weekdays going to work. If coupled with occasional short drives to the mall and some weekend long drives, I'm able to manage 3.9L/100km or 60.3mpg a tank. On a per trip basis, i can do a 3.7L/100km (63.6mpg) for the morning route at best. Going back home, my best was (3.5 or 67.2). That was in autumn (March-May). The past week, with current morning temps of 9Deg C (48.2F), mileage would go down about 2 mpg which is not too bad.

Yesterday, I was surprised I was able to do 3.5 km/L (67.2mpg) on a 50km+50km trip (wife + baby) that i wasn't really familiar with for 50% of the way (last two photos). I guess what helped was the decreased speed limit from 100kph to 80kph due to highway roadworks where I was able to modulate the throttle well.

I got a 2008 Prius a month ago. This site is amazing. I have learnt a lot about the car from this site. Used to get upper 40s per gallon with winter tires (Used car I bought came with winter tires). I have changed the tires to Bridgestone Eucopias. I maintain 42 PSI in all four tires. I am getting 64.4 MPG on this current tank. 95% of my drive is city with speed limits between 25 mph to 40 mph. I drive 40 miles back and forth to work. Its 3 times to the mileage I use to get with my ML320. I am very happy. On the interstates though with 70 mph speeds the mileage drops down to 48 MPG. Still working on my driving skills on the interstates:) .

Attached is my first 600 miles with one tank of gas. On the whole the average is 57 MPG so far.
