Good day everyone. I looking to do my first oil change on the Prius. It is a 2005 that I purchased about 3 months ago. I will be using some Amsoil 5w-30 that I use on my other cars. With regards to an oil filter here are my options, tell which is better: 1) Fram Tough Guard ($6.99) 2) Fram ($3.99) 3) STP ($4.49) 4) Bosch ($6.99) 5) AC Delco ($4.19)
With those choices, I'd probably go with the Bosch. If you want to expand your choices a little, you might try the Mobil 1 Model M1-103 oil filter. MAKE SURE with a look-up book that I'm not bum doping you! (I got the info on this site, which is usually pretty reliable.) There was also this comment: "You could try the M1-209 filter. Same internal specs but almost twice the filtering surface. Been using it for oil changes for almost 20K." http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-prius-technical-discussion/27264-mobil-1-oil-filter.html I've used FRAMs for years and years with zero problems however (comma!!!) there are 'filter snobs' out there that will recomend that you avoid this brand. YMMV. Good Luck!
I have to agree with edthefox5 and say oem oil filters. Sometimes local dealers have specials. One near me routinely sells boxes of 10 for under $40, and often includes drain plug crush washers.
Do you know for certain about the last 6 years of oil service? If not, then don't agonize over this and just buy a ****** filter. On the other hand, you've spent big bucks on oil so spend big bucks on the filter. BTW, the fram I recently bought at walmart for my 2010 was made in Korea not China. FWIW
The reason I picked those filters was because they were the ones my local AutoZone offers and I have a gift card that I want to use for this so don't really want to go anywhere else to buy it. I highly doubt AutoZone sells factory filters.
Why not save the gift card and use it later? For as cheap as the filters are at some dealers, you might as well save the gift card. I use the OEM filter in my 2010 Prius, and run Amsoil motor oil. Once Amsoil releases a filter for my Prius, I'll order them when I get my oil. However, I would say it probably doesn't matter if you just go with any of those filters for your oil change if you're really set on using your gift card for it.
Pers I use over-sized PureOne, but out of the ones you listed Bosch. Bosch distance+ and Mobil-1 are very good but cost more.
Does Amsoil make a filter that is currently compatible with a 2005 prius? If not, could you recommend a filter for a 2005 prius? Thanks!
