2010 Prius Starts By Itself !!!

Either that, or my car screws up much less often now than last year.

 

Actually, I have had a similar issue. About half a dozen times now I'll park, apply the e-brake, and shut the car off. As I gather my things and prepare to exit the vehicle, the vehicle will go into accessory mode. The LED on the power button turns orange, and the radio comes back on. Twice, although possibly unrelated, the radio presets will be cleared. I haven't had the time or patience to try and deal with the dealership, as the problem is highly intermittent at this point.

 

My 2010 started TWICE while parked in a driveway. The key was in the house. It is NOT a remote starter. This is my 2nd Prius and YES I know how to turn it off and on. The tech's think I'm crazy....but now we know that this has happened to others. I will keep researching and bring the info to the dealership.

 

When it starts and then drives away by itself, I will begin to worry...

 

A number of times I have parked and then start to do a few things, would get done doing things and would get out of the car thinking the car was off, when it was not! I though it was off, this is really easy to do!

 

Really,you don't notice the car screaming at you when you get out!! REALLY !!

I have a 2006 prius that has similar symptoms. both batteries are good in the vehicle after turning off the car with the power button, sometimes it will turn on in the auxiliary mode without touching anything. sometimes the car acts like it is totally dead when you come back later it responds normally.

 

you need to take it to the dealer and have it checked out before it starts itself up and drives off with your girl!

 

I always use the power button, not the park button on shut down, then...
I always lock the car before I walk away, even if it is in the garage. The car's screaming serves as a second reminder, if it is not off.

 

To the original poster, have you read the manual? A lot of people on this forum ask questions which are answered in the manual. If you are not sure how to turn the car on and off, read the manual. The Prius is different that a traditional car.
Sometimes I forget to turn off the car because the internal combustion engine is off. The car beeps after I take a few steps to remind me to turn it off.

 

It's the old paradigm of how could the car be on if I have my keys in my pocket. Over 100 years of doing things the same way you kinda have that tactual feedback that you have to over come. So even if KNOW

Also RT[F]M isn't really a good response. The manual may be difficult for some to read or understand. I doubt many people read a manual cover to cover. If you don't know what to look for … how do you look for it? It's like the dictionary, if you can't spell it how do you look it up?

Also having an understanding is different than just reading it. Really I read the part about leaving the keys in your car … but until it was discussed here … I really didn't understand it.

And after all isn't that why were are here? To HELP each other understand our complex and wonderful hybrids!

And you know … the car could actually be restarting it self. Software or hardware glitch … maybe could do it.

 

I just got back home, and my neighbor approached to me and said " Do you turn your car on at the middle of the night?" i was like no way. he says he has seen the car on on different occasions late at night. this is random, because it has never happened during the day.

 

how does he know it's on?

 

he is probably talking about the emission check pump running during the night.

he said it literally turned on.. it's been really cold up here lately, and I have the factory remote started, I thought maybe it had something to do with that..

 

and it's off in the morning?
