I see that the 2012 Camry Hybrid lost 250 lbs, gained from 35 to 41 mpg. That it has more room and more power, 0-60 in 7.8 seconds. Based on logic it seems to me the same could be done with the 2012 Prius.
My friend has a Hybrid Camry so I have been able to do a comparison with Prius(us), my previous Gen2 and my current Gen3. The Prius seems to get about 10mpg more under most conditions. The Prius is more nimble and, I think, more fun to drive. The Camry definitely has more power and in my opinion is more comfortable. I think the Gen3 Prius handles better, but I have a Prius V (five) which has wider tires and a quicker steering ratio than the other Gen3 versions. I haven't driven them but I understand that Ford and Hyundai also make pretty good hybrids now.
couldn't agree more except our 08 hycam is getting low to mid 40's and our 08 prius is getting low to mid 60's.
I've read the 2012 Camry Hybrid is an improvement over the 2011. Better mileage and no increase in price, as I recall. My brother said he would want the Camry Hybrid instead of the Prius because the Camry is a "true midsized car". I still lean towards the Prius.
me too, but if you prefer a roomier, softer, quieter more comfortible ride, and you don't mind the reduced mpg's, the camry is for you. or, perhaps, fusion.
I'm 6 ft 4 inches tall, so I'm hoping I don't have to squeeze into a Prius. I hope I have enough room. The Camry would give me more headroom and legroom. However the Prius has the Camry Hybrid beat by a good 10 MPG on the highway which is a big consideration. I'm going to head to the dealer to make sure I fit okay in a Prius as I've heard the moonroof can cut off some headroom.
I love the Camry. I had 4 of them dating back to 1989 before I got my 05 Prius. Everything written above is spot on concerning comfort, power and passenger room. However I know that I would miss the flexibility of the Prius being a hatchback. Nothing other than another hatchback can compare with the room in a Prius for the 'stuff' that people carry around from time to time. But no other hatchback compares to the Prius. I think that the Gen 7 TCH will be a raging success because of its inherent superior benefits to any of the hatchbacks on the market right now. The reduction in fuel usage will make the TCH a very close second choice to the Prius when fuel prices inevitably spike next year and beyond. At that point both will be equal fighters against that spike and then it will come down only to one's personal preference for a sedan or a hatchback.
You'll fit just fine in the Geniii Prius. I'm about 6' 3" and I had plenty of headroom to spare. If you tilt the seat back you have even more room.
When I bought my Prius 3 months ago I also looked at the Camry Hybrid. I opted for the Prius for many reasons as I felt the Prius was just "nicer" in general but one biggie for me was the location of the batteries. The Prius battery does not get in the way of anything as it is below the "trunk" area in the rear of the car. If you open up the Camry Hybrid's trunk you will find that the battery is placed so that you only have a small pass through available if you choose to fold down the seats to transport something. My previous vehicle was a wagon and I just couldn't deal with the idea of not being able to fold down the seats to transport something large like a TV or some furniture so the choice was clear and I went with a Prius and have nver regretted it!
OK thanks for that advice. If you have plenty of headroom at 6:3'' then maybe it won't mean my head hits the roof if I get a moonroof in my Prius.
That is interesting. Glad you like your Prius. I've heard the new Camry 2012 Hybrid is an upgrade. Unfortunately it won't be available until December.. I'm also afraid they will put that noisemaker on the 2012 Camry Hybrid.
You should be fine. It seems like the only people who have trouble with headroom are those that like to sit with the seat positioned straight up. IMO that is an awkward way to drive considering your arms are bent so much just to handle the steering wheel. Hill is 6'5" I believe and he fits into a GenII Prius like mine which has even less headroom!
The Vehicle Proximity Notification System is present in the 2012 Camry Hybrid. The pre-production models that I drove had it.
OK thanks for that info. And I'm assuming there was no off switch for the VPNS either. For me that pretty much rules out the 2012 Camry Hybrid. Looks like I'll be heading to the dealer next week to buy a 2011 Prius, which will apparently be the last Toyota hybrid without the VPNS.
why is VPNS such a problem? As I posted at My Nissan Leaf Forum • View topic - leaf sound about the Leaf: Yeah yeah, I know Bwilson4web was very against "bell the hybrid". FWIW, I showed up to Green Drive Expo on 9/17/11 and stood in the Toyota line 4x and test drove the '12 Prius v, '12 PHV Prius 2x, '12 HyCam. I didn't even KNOW the VPNS was on these vehicles until I saw posts here on PC until the next day or days afterward. If they made the noise, I didn't even hear them going by and never heard them while driving (or I just lumped it together into the typical inverter/motor whines Priuses make anyway). My time in line totaled at least 1-2.5 hours and all the while all of those vehicles went by. Leafs went by at GDE and I spoke to some people in line about their noisemaker. Their noisemaker isn't that loud (I'd intentionally had Leaf owners demo the noisemaker for me months before). Sometimes, even we couldn't hear it while in Toyota line. Another time, it was finally audible by me and the person I was speaking to. The Toyota staffers (likely working for a 3rd party agency) manning the laptops thought the Leaf's noise was peculiar and it seemed they'd never heard it before. To rule out a car because it has a noisemaker, even if the factory doesn't provide a switch seems silly.
you will certainly be able to turn off the noisemaker... even if there isnt an option in ecu, then by taking out the wire powering the actual device playing the sound.
