Hey y'all, my 2008 Prius was backed into by a 1968 ford 350. His insurance company (which is also mine, Geico) has accepted responsibility as his fault. What do you gurus make of the damage? Is it repairable? I love the car and I am not looking forward to having it totaled. What do you think? I sent her off to a Toyota Dealership Body Shop hoping they would show some extra love.
Completely repairable. Don't forget to ask for diminished value. No....scratch that. Demand dimished value. Your "baby" is now sullied by having been in an accident....maybe not to your way of thinking, but anyone who wants to buy a previously owned G3 will pay more for one that's not been in an accident. Well, that sure sux. Nothing of great significance immediately behind the impact area. But there are some important bits immediately below; 12V battery and braking system backup electrical super capacitor. Looks fixable to me, but there may be some lingering issues having to do with the watertightness of the rear hatch gasketing, and more likely the watertight seal around the tail light. Typically, water getting in from either source collects in the spare wheel well, up to the point where it can be heard sloshing around. Since the car was hit in the rear from the side, you should ask your adjuster for a rear wheel/axle alignment check, especially if the car was pushed against a curb, etc. If a whole new rear hatch is not needed, I'd SWAG* about $2K. *Scientific Wild-nice person Guess
what's diminished value? Original question was what's diminished value............ok, found out and got it. now my question is, is there a certain value or "damage up to" a certain amount in which the vehicle is no longer a certified used car, in case the original owner turns it in? if the damage is not structural, is it certifiable? i just got rear ended and the damage was about 2100. so can my car ever be a certified used car if I ever trade it in?
Yup, rear qtr panel, rear door, repair to front door, factory paint, done at a dealer, $3K easy. But not totaled. Make sure they pay for a rental. 68 F350 -- glad he had insurance.

I miss my Prius. Driving a Hyundai Elantra getting 25 MPG at 90 miles per day instaed of 43MPG. Body shop says 3 weeks minimum for repairs. $4600.00 damage. Now the gent who backed into the car is appealing the insurance companys finding him responsible for the non ticketed accident on private property.
Maybe he should've bought a Prius with a backup camera and avoided this whole mess while saving himself a ton of cash on gas at the same time. Sorry to hear about the wreck and lousy mileage rental car. I can't see his appeal going anywhere with a nice impression of his back bumper in the side of your car. In many (most?) states, being in reverse or moving backward at the time of an accident is automatic-at-fault.
Here is an update: My poor Prius is still in the shop. Another couple of weeks. Every layer the pull back adds more issues. Toyota Body Shop had to remove battery packs, duct, all the guts to start repairs. With all the crap they are doing Im starting to wonder if the car will operate the same. All from someone backing into us. Im glad they are taking their time but I miss driving past gas stations. I added the estimate for some light reading. Feel free to comment or advise.
