My dealer as told me a $500 deposit will need there by the end of the year to keep my reservation for a Prius plug in. They've learned that those who don't place a deposit often don't follow up on the buy!

Yes, and mine is already asking for a deposit! I said, "whats the pricing? what are the packages?" dead silence. I said, "when that's released you can take deposits, no one is going to buy a pig in a poke"

    :)

You get a deposit back if one decides not to buy one so what really is the problem?. You can't blame a dealer for not telling what he doesn't know yet. And based on what my dealer has hinted to what toyota has told him, it's not going to be easy to hold a Prius Plug In without that deposit when someone comes in off the street to buy one. The order of the deposit's is how his dealership is going to decide the order of whom actually gets one. He is expecting the demand to far outpace the supply of Prius Plug In's by quite a bit for into end of the summer and so he will likely allocate about half who comes in off the street for months. I'd guess most dealers are going to do something like this.

i think this is bullshit honestly. Toyota HQ is already going to have an order system in place, and that's what should determine who gets a car and when. I don't need some sleazy dealer getting in the way or giving my car away to some random dude who happens to walk in on the day of the delivery just because i wasn't willing to part with a chunk of my cash so that he can go and invest it in his bank account somewhere.

Don't all mufflers have a hole in them? All of mine do.....;)

My advice: Buy a leftover 10 or 11 and leg it out.
The PHV's are going to be hideously expensive and hard to get for the first year or two. Priuses (currently) hold a large percentage of their street vaule when it comes time to upgrade. Yeah.....it'd be cool to be the first kid on the block with a PHV, but right now I'm thinking that you can retrofit a G3 with an Enginer (or similar) kit and a couple of PHV badges and nobody will be the wiser..... :D

    Good Luck!

It is unclear which trim he was comparing to. He could be comparing a loaded PHV model to a stripped down cordless model.

I think you are right. The Plug-in Prius Five with AT package should fall within that range.

The price of Prius cost more in Europe than in US. You can't just get the difference in Euro and convert it to USD and add it to the price of the US model.

I think you mean "He could be comparing a loaded PHEV model to a stripped down HEV model". Both the Prius PHEV and HEV are "cordless" as are all cars.

I am not opposed to giving them a deposit, WHEN the order is placed, and not before. I am still undecided between the Leaf, Ford Focus EV, Plug in Prius, and of course the Tesla Model S. 2 of the 4 will be availble much sooner (Leaf & PiP), I am actually leaning towards the Leaf, as I already own a 2010 Prius, but I would end up having to keep the Prius if I get a Leaf, with the PiP I can trade/sell the 2010, and just live with the PiP for everything. The Leaf will certainly work for my roundtrip commute, its just a bit range limited for everything else. The Tesla Model S is wonderful, if they ever start making them, of course the first ones being produced are the "Signature" series with the 300 mile EV packs, can you say nearly $90K, and you need to pony up a $40K deposit that they will hold on to for at least a year before any possible delivery (Summer 2012 is when production is supposed to start).

So you see, I am not %100 positive I am buying a PiP, so until I make the decision, no deposit.

Oh god don't start that again!

The PHV comes with a cord non-PHV doesn't, using cord and cordless as a differentiator is fine.

2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid returns 112 MPGe

Link that includes the announcement for Frankfurt auto show...
It includes the toyota blurb, which is quite long...

I think, low 30's and I don't think it will be a stripped down prius...

Probably a nice high end 3 low end 4, though I think Toyota is still deciding where to come out with the price point... but you should be able to get one for low / mid 30's... before rebate.

Hey they have to be 3 - 5 k less than volt since it has such a bigger battery....

    No it isn't.

Using "cordless" is a deliberate sleezy tactic to make dated technology sound better.

Toyota will have a Leaf-ish online ordering process. No need to put deposits down with any dealer. Just register at Toyota site (if you haven't already) and wait.

I already have, and picked the dealer as well, which is why they are pestering me. I do think when you choose your dealer, even with the Toyota registration, you may be required to put down a deposit. Toyota has not said either way, but it wouldn't surprise me.
I haven't given up on the Leaf yet, but it is discouraging that we still can't order in MA yet, and had the "drive a Leaf" event a few months ago already.

Yes - now that they have their winter package - they should just let everyone (atleast the north-east, which would be a major market) order.
