I am new to the forum. I brought my Prius, 128,000 miles, into the dearler with the check engine light on. Runs fine, and checked the gas cap. Toyota dealer said they need to replace 4 fuel injectors, replace oxygen sensor, and clean the trottle body. Wanted $1800! Check engine light needs to be off so I can pass emission test. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
If the engine "runs fine" then the fuel injectors are not the problem. However I could believe that the throttle body interior needs cleaning and the oxygen sensor may need to be replaced. As previously stated, we need the DTC logged by your car to say more.
you would be surprised the level of carbon stand off living in the manifold and injectors. i have had sucess cleaning all but two injectors out of the thirty we have in our fleet. throttle is easy to do your self. the o2 issue could just be a symptom of the injector fault.
I believe that to be an absolute scam. As Patrick said, if the engine runs fine, obviously the injectors are good. Additionally, injectors rarely go bad (but they occasionally do) but the chances of all four going bad at once is extremely rare. My first question is: When they clear the code, does the CEL come right back on? If so, I would clean the throttle body and replace the O2 sensor, then have the codes reset and see what happens. If your engine runs fine and gas mileage is in the 39-43 range (depending on driving habits), then, I would confidently say there are no major problems that would warrant an $1800 bill. Keep us posted on the status.
Thanks for all the help, you guys were right. Throttle cleaning and new oxygen sensor did the trick, took it to a diiferent dealer and info on the forums with me. Thanks again, helped me save lots of $
