You're totally missing the point. And that makes you dangerous.

With this new IE vulnerability, there is *no* patch. You don't have to do anything to get infected. And if you visit a site like PriusChat, or any forum, that got hit with a CSS attack, you'll never know what hit you until your computer is toast.

Trust me, it's a very real possibility. I've sat in seminars during various conferences and learned just how people do it and what it can do.

If you use IE you really are playing with fire. There's two ways about it.

No, absolutely not, no one "can't comprehend" those with less computer skills. You'd probably be surprised at the sheer number of hours I've spent helping out people who know less about pc's, some of which are FAR more educated than I, who just happen to suck at pc's. No one "looks down" upon them, everyone has their areas of talent. I'm just saying/agreeing/making the point/theme of this thread/etc. that there are too many people who get a pc, and when it f'ks up on them, sit there and piss and moan about MSFT, although I will agree that maybe MSFT should take a look at just how many relevant complaints there are out there, with respect to security issues, and try to see if they can do something a little more with it.

Then again, the flip side is, no matter what MSFT does to improve, there's always going to be someone who figures out how to exploit something in some fashion.

Yes, and how many times have we heard this before?

How many times will hear similar in the future?

As long as M$$$ continues forcing IE on the masses, we will continue to hear this same thing in the future.

Humans are adverse to changing their status quo - be it laziness or apathy - until they see a convincing benefit to change.

A good analogy for us Prius drivers is a rhetorical question. Why do people still drive cars that idle their gas engines?
The world would be a better place if most cars and trucks were hybrids. The internet too would be a better place if most browsers were not IE.

Why anyone would still use IE is beyond me . . . unless they are forced to use it due to IE’s monopolistic standards. Change will not come until coders, web designers and the general public see a convincing benefit to change . . . and as long as IE has a majority, we are stuck with the status quo.

Why do you think M$$$ stopped development on IE for so many years? Lack of competition due to their monopoly made them lazy and apathetic. Why bother innovating and improving a browser for which there was no real competition. For that, we all suffered!

Now that there is some competition - better browsers - M$$$ has reconvened there browser division and will come out with newer versions of IE . . . not really innovating . . . just copying. “OOH, look at us with IE7, we have Tabbed Browsing too . . . and we forcefully put it on your computer for your benefit.â€

"Too many apps" has nothing to do with reliability. MS's OSes have always been fundamentally fragile and unreliable. They didn't have to be; any number of Unix-derived OSes are vastly more robust. As for the uneven quality of MS's own applications, the Xbox 360 provides fresh evidence.

MS has hit the iceberg. They just don't know it yet.

I am anti-Microsoft because they didn't prepare enough Xbox 360s for people like me who refusedto camp out to buy stuff.

I've tested this threat with IE on both Windows 2003 and IE 7 Beta on XP and it wasn't affect on either of them.

I think this threat is less of a risk than you think to the normal user.

Riddle me this caligula, how many 'normal' users are running Windows 2003 or IE 7 beta?

    Correct answer: Not many.

Ok. I went and tested on an XP system and I set the settings to the default security settings. Still wasn't effected.

Ah. Now you're putting words in my mouth.

First of all, in the "Zero Day Exploit" post, it was Patrick (Sufferin' Prius Envy) who thoughtfully posted the details about this exploit and the link.

Here is the EXACT WORDING of my reply:

"Our workstations are supposedly up to date, but IE locked up so badly I had to do "

    and

"on my home machine I tried that URL that locked up my work machine, and nothing bad happened. K-Force just told me it had blocked a browser hijack attempt and let me continue with my work."

I suppose with an attitude like yours you get fired a lot. Hmmm?

This was part of the microsoft plan. They purposefully reduced the initial shipment to plan a media event.

Dude! You managed to not be affected by a bug for which there is no fix. Quick, call Microsoft and they can turn your system into a donor system. The future of Windows depends on you!

My point is, that maybe it's not as big a problem as media sources are making it out to be. how many people do you know that have been affected by it? Why are the stories all stating how many people COULD be affected instead of how many people HAVE been?

I think any exploit that is out there is just a "proof of concept" at this point... Nothing malicious happens..

There have been worse exploits in the past.

Dude, now you're playing the semantics game. Yes, I put the words in your mouth that effectively related the same concept/idea/result.

As for getting fired a lot... ...well, I gotta be honest...

    ... 's never happened.

    ;)

I think that the politicians need to break up MS so that china, japan, korea, and others can actively compete with them and more americans can lose their jobs.

If auto companies are stuck on stupid and build big gas hogs, then lay off 30,000 employees because people don't buy their bad management products, nobody says they are the bad guys.

When politicians sell all the oil companies and US refineries, nobody condems them instead they get re-elected and re-elected.

With our trade deficit is at an all time high, and most of our jobs are "on the system (taxpayer), should we punish MS because they are a success???

Look around your city and the people that lives in your subdivision or street and ask how many people are really working for a company that is not on the system or that are paying taxes. Many in our subdivison are retired on SS, or a postman, service companies, policemen, sales people for US customers, and nobody owns or works for companies that design, manufacture, or export products to foriegn customers.

Thank God for MS, and companies like them in the USA. Those bad guys will probably have to pay all our retirement SS and healthcare in the future unless our politicians and lobbyist finds a way to give their technology to our foreign competition. Then we can say "Good For Them".....but who is going to pay for your American dream?
