I just picked up my 2005 Prius and love it. My wife has a complaint however, about the Speedometer. The speedometer reflects on the dash making a green line on the dash. The windshield picks this up at night and there is a green line in the center of the windshield from the reflection of the speedometer on the dashboard. (a reflection of a reflection) I seem to be able to ignore it without too much difficulty, but my wife says she keeps wanting to focus on it. This is only a problem at night. Does anybody else have this problem?
It is a wheel at the bottom of the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel. I highly recommend that you read the owner's manual.
I wonder if this is a gender thing. I hate it when there is any reflection off the windshield, and the green glare bothered me as well, but it doesn't bother my boyfriend (also may be a height difference thing). Using the wheel to dim the dash will also dim the MFD, which is way too bright at night if you have Nav (white background). The really cool thing is that the car will remember this setting, so when you turn on the headlights, everything will automatically dim to night mode and brighten up again when you turn off the headlights.
So far I have read the "Prius User Guide" but there was no mention in it about the rheostat knob. My wife says she took in the users manual into the house for some bedside reading, but haven't had time to pick it up and dig in yet. Most of the operations of the car seem to be for the most part self explanatory. Guess with this car the biblical method might not be the best.. "Seek and Ye Shall Find".
Forte, I'm sorry that this is such a crappy picture. I'm at work and don't have access to pictures other than those stored on my computer. In this picture, I have attempted to highlight the general area. If you squint and turn your monitor sideways, you might be able to see the bottom of the rheostat sticking out there from behind the steering wheel. It is much easier seen if you stand outside the car on the driver side, open the door, and look at the area of the dashboard behind the steering wheel. Good luck.

This green glare has also bothered me. I thought it was a reflection off the dashboard, so I went to put some felt over the offending surface. Lo and behold, there is no reflection off the dash. IT IS A PROJECTION. When you look at the speed readout, you are actually looking at a mirrored reflection. The glare on the windshield is actually the light from the image passing through a glass plate in the dashboard. After 21,000 miles, I'm still learning new things about this car.
i just picked up my '08 prius hours ago, and as soon as i got dark i started swearing when i saw the green glare. i'm going to try some of the fixes i saw in another thread, im a little surprised that a detail like this got overlooked when it obviously bothers so many people.
The knob below left of the steering wheel should allow for you to adjust the glare away as well as light up the CD player and radio,
This glare problem was driving me CRAZY! I recently bought my Prius (2007) and my daughter and I drove it from Raleigh, NC to Albany, NY (college visit). We mainly drove after daylight hours and through the night. The green glow was DIRECTLY in my line of sight - - for 10 hours - - each way! And I agree about the dim steering wheel buttons - very inconvenient.
Has any one found a permanent fix for this green glare. Has anyone talk to a dealer and gotten a good answer. Does Toyota know about this, it has to be considered a hazard. any new info. helpppp
Hey guys there is a rheostat (a little knob or wheel like thing) on the dash board that adjusts the brightness of the display. All that is need is, at night when the all the lights are on, is to fool around with the wheel until the glare is gone but you can still read the instrument display.
This is an old problem, and it is related to the design of the Prius. Certainly the dealers and Toyota know about it and factored it into the design of the next generation. As for a fix, you have three options: 1) Change your seating position. 2) Turn down the brightness of the display. 3) Place a black cloth on the dash. Tom
There is an easy and permanent fix to the green glare on the windshield from the speedometer. You have to tape down a short vertical barrier on the dash that will redirect the green light. The lights on the dash are super bright in the rheostat detent position. If your so blind you cannot see it without it being on full blast you have bigger problems. Turning it off detent you cannot see the green in the windshield. And its still really bright. The knob is right where it is on most cars. left side of dash. There's very little else next to it.
