So the Chinese Prius is for local market only? I'd hope so, otherwise Toyota will need to look long and hard at future quality control!
Good thing there will be Ford alternatives by then. I won't buy a Chinese sourced hybrid, those parts are quite critical after all.
that is what the article said. since it is limited to RE magnets in electric motors, interesting to see how Toyota will manage it.. ship HSD and install motors in China? ship components and assemble HSD? produce components and build HSD in China?
They're already building the Prius in Thailand for the Asian markets and Australia. It's just more of the softly-softly approach to moving production away from Japan.
no, this is the same as Gen2 Prius that was assembled in China for local sales until 2009. Customs on imported vehicles in China are very high and if you want car to sell, you have to produce it locally or else it will be way too expensive. This is for local Chinese sales only. Toyota does not export any parts out of China, unlike many other manufacturers, including Honda.
So with this move they'll be able to sell like 2 instead of 1 Prius per year in China? Yeah +100% sales is good investment I know.
That was then, and this is now. But yeah I was only half-joking. I'm sure they'll be able to do a lot better if their asking price drops to a point where the fuel savings the Prius offers start making financial sense. Most Chinese people are good at math and don't care about being "green", after all.
Sounds like QC has already begun a precipitous slide with the GIII. I'd hate to see it fall even further.
