how many GIII owners are getting over 60MPG?

63.9 MPG since the first refill after I got it in May, roughly 4800 miles. That's calculated MPG, my HSI reads about 5% higher than that. Still on the learning curve, but I'm very happy.

8x in 2011 (and working on my 9th right now, HSI = 65.6 mpg after 450 miles)

Last year, I got my best mileage from August - November (then came the cooler temps and winter blend gas) when I had 8 out of 10 tanks come in above 60 mpg (calculated). Thus, I may get 15+ 60 mpg tanks this year.

My HSI reads about 5% high as well.

 

Best I have ever done was 59.9 on the display, and if I remember correctly it was 57 something when I manually calculated it out. I have been in a slump lately only getting about 54. I am just over 9,000 miles though, so I think by forum standards my ICE is not broken in fully yet. Going to be at 10,000 next week, and get the oil changed though (going to make sure they use the 0w20). Hopefully after that I will be able to break my rut, and get past the 60 barrier.

 

I have had my 2011 Prius III for 5 weeks and have 6000 miles on it. On my last tank I was at 61mpg. This tank I am at 64mpg. I see a huge differance when I use the A/C. I drive over 40K per year and before my Prius I drove a 5.7L Magnum. Switching to the Prius I save over $400 per month in fuel cost.

First, I have had my Prius for just over a month and I love it! I thought I was pretty happy with my MPG but then read this thread. lol!

My hand calculated US gallon MPGs for my first four tanks are 53.82, 54.32, 47.61. 54.45 respectively (the 47.61 was a trip in the lovely Canadian Rockies - which I recommend everyone visit at least once in their lives by the way).

I've been trying to drive very "Prius like" (even trying a little pulse and glide too), my tires are at 42/20 psi and have not been using A/C very much at all.

What I would like to suggest is that for those people getting over 60mpg maybe include a tip or hint as to how they feel they might be achieving this extraordinary mileage. Even if you don't suspect why - feel free to say "just lucky I guess".

Love to hear any thoughts from those that have already posted too.

 

1) I keep my freeway speeds to 60 mph or less.

2) When I hit slow and go traffic, I don't tailgate, I try to allow several car spaces between me and the car in front of me. It allows me to pulse and glide. I seldom have to use the brakes.

3) I keep my tires at 42/40 (max pressure and max pressure -2psi)

4) I try to anticipate traffic and try to a) coast to slow down b) use regen only braking if I need to stop more quickly c) use brakes until I can go back to b or a.

That being said, I do commute 70 miles per day. It is mostly highway with some slow and go (which actually helps my mileage a good deal). The 35 x 2 miles helps offset the "first 5 minute warm up" penalty. My commute is mostly flat, but there is one grade that I pass everyday (downhill on the way to work, uphill coming home).

 

There are people around that are getting higher mpg's than me, but here are some things that I have been using:
(1) Most important, slowing down. This is just elementary physics. Driving the speed limit on local roads, and below the speed limit on multilane highways (in the right lane of course!) where faster traffic can pass. I aim for 50mph on highways, but not everyone will be comfortable with that, so whatever you feel is OK for you. Lower speeds will yield higher mpg's, for a number of reasons.
(2) Slowing down even further if there is no traffic behind you.
(3) Not accelerating hard from stops, not braking hard into stops.
(4) Allowing a "cushion" to traffic ahead so you may be able to avoid stopping if they turn, etc.
(5) Trying to "time" lights so you avoid coming to a dead stop.
(6) Tire pressures at 44psi (sidewall rating). I'm considering going higher. Stock wheels and tires.
(7) ScanGauge with display showing rpm (so you can see when the gas engine is running), gph (so you can see if gas is flowing - in warp stealth mode the gas engine is spinning but no fuel goes to it), mpg (easier to read than the bar graph), and coolant temp (so you know when the gas engine is warmed up).

It's best to select the HSI display with the horizontal bar display because it shows you how much load you're putting on the engine/motors. The energy flow display is far too distracting for me.

I just got my first prius 2 weeks ago averaging 49- was wondering how to get more- but in LA, Ca. there is no way I can go under 65 on a freeway without endangering people's lives. Doing lots of gliding up to lights though and foot off gas on downhills!

 

One 60mpg tank but the 2010 is more consistant. The 2006 had more 60's & saw 70's but the 2010 has a higher average.

The tips to achieve a good mileage have been already written many times.

The most important: drive as you had no brakes.

 

Have not had a tank under 60 mpg (at the pump) since April.

60 mpg (lessee: 235.2/60=3.9) translates to 3.9 liters per 100 km. I've gotten our displayed mileage below that, with reset odometer and driving like an angel, lowest being maybe 3.8. And with the Toyota fudge factor, real mileage was likely more like 4.2 liter/100km, which translates to 56 mpg. Ours has the 17" wider wheel/tire combo, FWIW.

But, week in, week out, there's no way we could maintain that sort of mileage with our variety of short trips. But we keep working at it:

Our year to date calculated mileage is at 46.9 mpg (US gallon). Recent around town tanks through the summer have been around 49~51 mpg (again, all calculated). Best was a vacation trip over to long beach, at 53.9 mpg. That was by no means level straight roads, but still mostly highway.

 

I sometimes get 60+ mpg on individual trips (and occasionally even 70), without taking a debt in the form of a lower battery SoC. However, since I often take short-ish trips, there's a lot of traffic in the area, and I often go over mountains, my average is around 53 mpg (and very slowly improving).

I do a lot of pulse & glide, and timing lights, and choosing routes that have fewer stops/less traffic/lower speeds. When I drive very late at night, I usually do the best, because I can extend the pulse & glide to 15+ mph from high speed to low.

I recently decided that I'd be better off using mainly electric power in interstate traffic jams, as I can never get enough space to effectively pulse; I can pulse for a couple seconds, but by that point I'm approaching the car in front of me too quickly, and I think there's a fair amount of overhead in getting the engine started, so you're better off pulling from the battery than running the engine for only 2 seconds.

 

I drive mostly around town, trips 10 miles or less. Over the course of a tank of gas, I might do 1 or 2 round trips greater than 50 miles. Trip A over the last 3000 miles has me at 49.7 MPG. Very happy wih this mileage. If I commuted, I'm sure it would be a lot better. I have done hypermiling trips of 200 miles just to see if I match up with commuters and have done 60 MPG with ease. BTW, one way trips dont count. Most of those trips with really high MPG's are downhill.

 

Or with a tailwind....
