we all know the tpms and backup camera weren't added till 06, but i got reared and noticed the camera when i got my car back from the bodyshop. the chmsl isn't working, so the shop is going back in to investigate the harness, but my question is:

can and how can i get my mfd to recognize the camera??

I never asked for a camera but thats what State Farm gave me, I don't mind paying a little money for a cable if thats all it takes, someone with knowledge plz help me out, thanks.

as a package 5 from 05 you're prius does not have nav, right?

i think nav is required as the feed goes into the amp (i think it was the smaller blue square connector). it's been a while since i've heard a discussion on this so i could possibly be wrong.

if they put it in, they probably didn't run the interior wires to make it run. if you're system can use it, all you need to do is plug it in (again.. from memory)

yes I have every option in both my 04 and 05 prius, navigation, xenons, sks, bluetooth, jbl, etc

So all I need is to buy the cable?? does it have to be from the stealership?? thanks

i thought in 04 and 05 that a fully loaded prius was a package 9.. then in 06+ the packages topped at 5 or 6 due to reconfigurations... (just an observation)

for all i know... if you plug it in, the car does the rest.

The MFD screen resolution is higher in the 06-09 prius than the 04-05 models. I don't have the NAV, but I imagine that the 05 NAV uses the same resolution. If so, I don't think it will be compatible.

Great point about the MFD screen resolutions.

From memory a few years old, the camera feed is different than the MFD data feed/GPS. Now I remember a lengthy discussion about what it has from the aftermarket data readout several owners installed that used the MFD as a display. So your car -may- have the connector at the MFD. I'm not so sure it has the logic to switch the camera onto the display. The cabling to the rear is NOT installed. Prius come with only the wires for the options they have, not all possible options.

It would probably be expensive to run the wires and get it working. But I'm sure it -can- be done, just not sure it should be done. ;)

yes my windows are not tinted so I do not need a camera that badly as I back into all parking spaces upon arriving so when I leave all I do is put in drive and go. Prius was not my first car with poor rear visibility, my rodeo had the spare on the tailgate so looking in the rearview of my prius required very little getting used to for me.

It would be worth paying $50 or $100 to get it working, especially since it is oem quality, and not some aftermarket ebay junk camera. But I couldn't justify paying more than that, especially considering the car wouldn't automatically switch to camera mode when I put it into reverse.

Now if only I could get the side mirrors to tilt down a little when switching to reverse so I could see the curb . . .

Similarly, what if I were to purchase a used backup camera from a Prius to install into an '07 Prius that has Navigation, would it work?

Would it be a plug & play issue?

very carefully examine the tailgate of a prius with a camera, you will notice it is recessed to give it a more 'built in' look than an aftermarket camera, it also probably helps protect it from the elements. Then look at your tailgate carefully with a flashlight, does it look like the camera will be able to slide into its own special chamber?? perhaps there is a 'cover' than can be popped off so that you can slide the camera into a chamber.

but even if you get the camera installed you may have to incur the high expense of burying a cable in the headliner or down though the carpet, this would be extremely expensive . . . unless you can confirm that the cable is already there.

then lastly you have to find out how to get the camera to switch on automatically when you place the car in reverse, otherwise its all for nothing. its possible its all plug and play, and you can hope for the best, but you better plan for the worse and do your research.

Hiya Cobra! Long time no etc. The Sirius unit you installed for me lo these many years ago was still going fine, last I checked, but I stopped paying them when I got a smartphone that I can use for most of the same stuff.

Anywho, my 06 pkg 3 does not have Nav but it does have the camera (3 added SKS & Camera). The 04-05s were the ones that only went up to 6, 06 went up to 9,and I haven't a clue what they did with the package numbers after that. OT I know, but MAY prevent SOME confusion.

A thought just occcurred to me...There is at least one thread that describes the hack to allow viewing of camera input even when the car is NOT in reverse (you might try searching for list of hacks and easter eggs to start with). This might well give you sufficient wiring info to see if you can shoehorn it into your 05.
