I did some searching and couldn't find a thread with the exact same issue I am having, so I thought I would post to see what you guys think.

Sometimes when I start my 2011 Prius it will start normally, but after start-up has completed and I put it into gear(either reverse or drive), the slip indicator light will come on and stay on until I either restart the car or put it back into park. This happens probably 10-15% of the time. No alarm noise comes on, but the other strange thing that happens is the vehicle will not move while the light is on.

Anybody have any advice or thoughts?

Probably not the one you want, but it's under warranty. Take it back to the dealer and let them figure it out.

Try not pressing the brake pedal so hard. The Hill Start Assist is designed to come on when pressing the brake pedal harder than normal. It is designed to hold the car from rolling backwards on an incline for 2 seconds so you can take your foot off of the brake and press the accelerator.

If it comes on with a light press of the brake pedal you may want to take it to the dealer and show it to them.

Thanks goober and jd! I will have to be aware of the amount of preasure I am putting on the break and see if that makes a difference.

I the light is staying on after you are moving, then I say there is something wrong and the next step is taking it to the dealership.

Spiderman - Thanks for your response. When the light is on, I can't move. The car will not go forward or reverse. It's really kind of wierd. I am hoping jd is right and I am just pushing the break pedal too hard and activating the Hill Start Assist. We shall see. Time to get my testing boots on. =)

Oh OK, so yeah, if you are not moving the hill assist is activated but like JD mention should release after a couple of seconds or if you press the accelerator while in R or D/B.

    qbee - I hope so. <crosses fingers>

spiderman - I will also try to wait a bit if it comes on again to see if it will clear.

mgb - I don't recall hearing a beep, but I will try to pay better attention.

It's either 1 beep "on", 2 beeps "off" or the other way around. I hear it so often I don't pay any attention to it. Pay attention to traffic from the side or use HSA to (hopefully) avoid the Red Light Runner.

Jim - Thanks for the heads up on the beep pattern. So far, I have been just lightly pressing the break pedal when turning on the car and have not had this issue. However, just one days testing does not make a good testing crop.

Ok gang, here is my report back. It has been almost a week since I began testing the suggestion brought up in this thread and I believe it is the Hill Start Assist that was coming on. I have been very carefull in the amount of preasure I am putting on the break while starting the car and have not had this happen once(usually it would happen a couple times a week). Thanks for all your responses and advise. I can now breath a sigh of relief.

Same thing here with my 2 week old Prius. Beep, light comes on and then atopped dead at a traffic light. I then figured out I was also putting too much pressure on the brake. Glad to see I'm not the only one who had this problem.
