If apple was price competitive with a PC, I think they would overtake the market. I tried an apple laptop for about 2 weeks, but had to return it because I could not justify the $2200 cost. I have a dell now, that was half the price, and has a blu-ray player, and a host of other items over the Apple.

Overtaking the PC does not translate into success as a computer company. Sometimes building a good reliable product is a good strategy(not always true, but it works for apple).

    Apple's market cap tops $300 billion - Apple 2.0 - Fortune Tech

Will it surpass Exxon? I don't think so. Not with gas going to 5 bucks a gallon in the next few years.

Booting this thread reminds me of two things:

    1) I almost forgot how crappy Dell is. ALMOST. I smile as I type this on my (relatively) new iMac.

    2) I still miss TJ.

He died. TJ suffered from diabetes and its complications, and was unable to fight off an infection in his leg, if I recall correctly. I miss him too. He was a good person.

Genesis was his name for his car.

Woah. I didn't know that. Did someone come on to this site to inform us of that? I don't recall. I do recall his having issues of insurance and leg infections. I think he also had a mustang.

    Misleading.

The PC market is fragmented. HP has the biggest market share followed by Dell.

The total PC market dwarfs Apple. Apple has less than 10% of the computer market. Things have probably improved a bit with their iPad, but they still have a hard core bunch of upscale followers who have used Apple from the beginning. People who don't mind paying double the price for a quality product with software limitations.

Apple survives by innovation. IPod and iPad are examples. I never liked their IPod because it's geared to buying music from their store. When you buy Apple, you're stuck with Apple. Maybe that's why their customers are loyal.

    Psport,

You miss an essential point. While the entire PC market dwarfs Apple's share, Apple has grown not because of th PC Business, but because of it's game changing products. I tunes is a huge revenue source for Apple, and was created at a time when everybody else was having trouble bringing the music business to the digital age. It was the integration of the PC , the IPod and I tunes that turned Apple ingot he giant it is. The seamless nature of the way they integrate made it easy for non geeks to do stuff across multiple platforms without needing extensive learning curve.

The iPhone was logical extension, followed by the iPad. As has been suggested, Jobs came up with the IPad first, but insisted that the iPhone come to market first because he knew the impact it would have.

You are correct that the iproducts are geared toward buying front he I tunes store, but that said, I have thousands of tunes on my system, only one of which was purchased from iTunes.
