I have searched and found out that non-JBL front speakers are 6x9" in size, which should provide plenty of bass provided that aftermarket amp is installed. Question I have is how come every posts I come across regarding speaker installation involves installation of 6.5" speakers? Also, crutchfield lists only 6.5" or smaller speakers for front door application. I searched, but couldn't find information. Thanks in advance,
There is a much bigger selection of round speakers to choose from. I don't remember how much depth is available in the doors, possibly a good 6x9 is too deep to fit?? Edit: Ths thread has some good pictures at the start http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...oval-front-door-speaker-removal-pictures.html There is frequently someone opening their door panels in the forum, maybe they will measure the depth for you. That reinforcement bar in the 11th picture from the top looks like the depth limiter. Direct link https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_9QjfnwYrc0A/TZpdcgeNKaI/AAAAAAAAAGE/jl5Xr93_NNk/s500/IMG_1124.JPG
Thanks for the link. Reminds me of days when I tried to install 6.5" component speakers on my Subaru. Speakers didn't fit in the front because of window guide being on the way; I had to use thick bracket in order to make speaker clear. How is stock 6x9" speaker compared to aftermarket 6.5" speaker in terms of bass? I noticed OEM 6.5" speaker has considerably more low-end bass compared to Infinity speaker we replaced them with.
Likely because that is what comes with most component sets. With Crutchfield you will notice most 6x9's or coax or triax. My "guess" is that 6x9s are cheaters to get lower bass cheaper, but at the cost of quality. A round speaker is better. The base Prius speakers are junk and thier JBLs are not much better.
Frodoz beat me to it. The stock 6x9 speakers are complete crap compared to 2 for $50 6.5 diameter speakers. The stock ones have weak muddy bass. I did a qualitative comparison here during my step by step door speaker upgrade. It's not scientific but the differences were obvious. http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...ics/93817-gen-3-non-jbl-spearker-upgrade.html
Thanks for the great information. How did speaker sound without aluminum ring attached? did you have to cut some plastic trim from the door card to make it fit?
I didn't do an A-B comparison with and without the ring. It seemd like a case it might help and couldn't hurt. The pictures don't make it obvious but the ring was bridging a relatively small gap, under an inch and the aluminum was bonded to the speaker adapters with RTV and had a ring of rubber weatherstrip to seal it to the door card. So no thin aluminum resonance problems I don't remember trimming the door card. The stock speaker had been sealed to the door card with some thin foam rubber so the inside surface of the door card was relatively flat. If I did trim it it was just some trivial plastic flashing or rib.
Thanks again for the useful information. We are picking up the Prius 2 tomorrow. Look forward to working on the car!
I assume JBL front speaker is also 6x9"? if so, is it considered a decent upgrade for non-JBL Prius if I can get find a set for under $50?
IIRC, the JBL door speakers are a different impedance and not very good speakers. If you do use 6x9 speakers be aware that the non-JBL Prius speakers have a considerable stand off built in to them so you would need a thick adapter to mount them at the same distance from the door as the originals
I fing the JBL speakers in my Prius to be perfectly adequate. I often turn the bass down because it is too hoonish. But I do enjoy In a Gadda da Vida at full abss occasionally. It seems to me US Prius are less well accessoried than Aussie Prius??
