whats the purpose of testing it for 2-3 years if you wont learn and change from the tests?
I would guess Toyota figured out slightly higher range is better.

    Good point.

(Or maybe Toyota figured out how to get a 40 mile EV range and wants the announcement to be a surprise for all the hundreds of thousands of Volt buyers.)

The prototype Prius PHV were manufactured in 2009. So the 2012 production model should have better range, after Kaizen. They may keep the same range and reduce the price but I think they will do a bit of both.

20+ EV miles will be very appealing to me. 12-13 EV miles is marginal given the number of 50 mile trips the Prius takes now. But with 20 EV miles range the Prius PHEV will likely cut our gas costs in half except for any long trips.

Hoping to be surprised by the Frankfurt announcement!

Is that 50 miles one way or round trip?

Round trip - so if there was opportunity to charge at the destination it could really cut gas usage.

Yea.. Takes 3 hours to full using the regular 120v. Do you normally stay more than 3 hours at the destination?

3 hours gives you time to go shopping while your Plug In Prii (PIP) refreshes it's batteries :p

Anyone else remeber Honda Civic's hybrid folly? By programming for maximum traction battery (to achieve highest mpg's) usage - the Civic traction pack experienced premature failures in such quantity that Honda recalled Civics, and reprogrammed so that pack use would be less agressive. Result? Civics no longer meet their own EPA mpg ratings with reprogrammed traction packs. (Side note) What an irony - the yellow car pool lane HOV stickers wouldn't have been issued to Civics in Calif. with their re-programmed / lower mileage battery management systems ... but, the stickers expired any way.

That's just a little of the down side from over utilizing hybrid packs. Anyway, Toyota obviously knows with their decade (plus) experience with traction packs, exactly how much the packs can be expected to deliver, yet still endure all the way through CARB's 150,000 mile -10 year expectations. Seeing how Civic's failed pack became some what of a P.R. nightmare, Toyota will be doublely certain that their PHEV's will go the distance ... so any re-programming they've done for greater EV range will likely take into account the down sides that Honda seemed to neglect.

It won't get 77% better, that's a silly figure. I care about as do most what mileage will it get once it's dumped most of its charge-up after the ~13 miles.

The PHEV Prii will regen all it's batteries so with the increased battery capacity, it should get better gas mileage than a NON-PHEV Prii would. How much is the question though :noidea:

It's expected it will regen once ev range is used up, this has not been confirmed by Toyota officially as of yet.

Typically, yes. Unfortunately, there is no charging infrastructure there or within walking distance at this time.

The production car will be introduced on Sept 15th in Frankfurt. Then we should get the specs, and maybe some idea of the price.

Not going to happen... sleep, that is. The excitement following that will be too much to bare. There will be no relief to the anticipation.

My first Prius specs reveal was over 11 years ago. It was the upgrade from Original to Classic. Sleep has never been the same ever since.

Perhaps the plug is hiding under the Toyota logo a la Nissan leaf. That way it would make it easier to plug in in some cases.

It's a right-hand drive so I'd think the plug is on the other side.
