Finally! How to program a SKS key fob with SKS functionality

Thank you for this information. I asked about a replacement fob a few weeks ago and was told that programming would cost about US$125, after paying US$200 for the new fob.

This is just the same procedure for the non-SKS keys. Are you sure that it works for SKS ones?

 

I am tired and my wife has given up. We havevtried all of these thread ideas. Now she is going to the dealer. I feel like I am going to be screwed. I feel lost and scared. Any advice about how to provide being ripped off by dealer. Feel lost and lead astray.

 

Nothing you can do. Go to the dealer, get it programmed drive home happy with 2 keys.

The alternative is to buy the Toyota Techstream computers and a subscription to their high end service contract program that allows access to the encryption algorithms used in the keys. For about $4000 and a subscription you too can do it at home. Or just go to the dealer wait a few minutes and drive away $100-$300 poorer.

 

The whole thing about it costing $125 to get a key programmed is a ripoff. It takes about 30 seconds to program all this. They should do it free whether or not you buy the key from Toyota I owned a 1999 Nissan Maxima. An aftermarket remote start was dealer installed when new. At 130,000 it started causing the keys to lose the program. I had to tow it to the dealer and they charged me an hours labor....... after I watched them take a handheld computer code reader out to the car, hook it up and the car started.. Took it into the shop and less than 10 minutes later I was told it was ready to go...... still got charged for an hours labor

 

It's called profit.

I am sure many of the items you buy on a daily basis all have a markup associated with them as do the ones you buy occasionally and the same with services.

I gave the solution above. If you find it a ripoff, you to can program your own keys as many times as you want from the comfort of your couch. But when it is all said and done, you have spent much more than just going to the dealer.

 

Call around if you have a few Toyota dealerships in your area. The first 2-3 dealerships I called quotes a price range of $75-$125, eventually I found one that said that they program it for free, though it does not include cutting the physical key.

 

No one can steal your car unless you give them your key or they drag it on to a flatbed. Either the dealer rips you off, or the car thieves do.

 

I purchased my 2007 Prius Touring Pkg #6 a few weeks ago and it had only 1 key. I live in the Tacoma/Seattle area and called around and most quotes were around $275 to $350 for the key and programming. BURIEN TOYOTA near the SeaTac airport had the best rates - so low compared to the others, that I thought hmmm...what's the catch? No catch! Only $159 for the Smart Key and $59 for programming (and they referred me to a locksmith who copied the door key for only $4). Tried to get the dealer closest to my home to match their price, but they would not budge. So had to drive a little further - but hey, I'm driving a Prius! I probably burned less than half a gallon of gas!

 

So, it is possible to find a decent dealer after all.

 

eluo, can you confirm that your Prius is USDM? I haven't seen anyone else confirm that this has worked for them, but I'll give it a try and report back as long as your Prius was also sold in the US.

 

I got a second key by way of my used car dealer going through a Toyota dealer. I believe the fob cost $150 and the programming was $50. $200 for a second key

 

I would like to know if anyone has tried the steps yet in the pdf file. Will it work?

 

That's all I needed to know. Thanks! I just wanted to make sure you didn't live in Europe or Australia and have a car that might have slightly different programming. I just ordered a new key and will report back once I try to program the car to accept it.

Could you explain step 8 and 9 as to the choosing of a mode? It is unclear to me if, after pressing the power switch, you need to also do something with the lock to indicate which mode is being selected, before removing the master key.
Does successful completion of the procedure in the pdf also allow for operation of the car, or do you need to complete another procedure?
