UPDATE: 392100 I have another experiment im willing to try, my mind for some reason cant get rid of trying AMSOIL, although I am most happy with Royal Purple. If anyone has already tried and can convince me otherwise, I will give u guys and update in about a week. ALSO, since its been extremely hot, sleeping in car with windows cracked at night has become a nightmare. How much battery life will be lost if i use the ac, lets say about 4-5 hours a night. Thanks.

It depends if you are on the highway or city. Highway miles with the gas engine running should not affect the battery life since electricity is always available.

On the other hand, the city or traffic congestion would use battery cycles as the gas engine is turned off.

I think what people usually do is to leave the car in READY mode and allow the engine to come on to charge the HV battery once in a while. Just make sure there is enough open space around the car for good ventilation. Good luck and looking forward to the 400K mark. :)

LOL usbseawolf2000. I don't think he'll be driving (either highway or city miles) while he's sleeping. At least I hope not. :p

Edit: On second thoughts, maybe that's his secret for logging so many miles. :D

Once the battery gets down to 2 bars SoC, the engine will come up for about a minute to charge it. The cycle will repeat every 5-10 minutes, depending on what the A/C settings are.

I totally missed the sleeping in the car part.

When the cabin reached the temp, maintaining that temp requires only 2 to 3 Amp from the HV battery. Since the HV battery is about 200 Volt, power consumption is about 400 to 600 Watts. On average, it is probably 500 Watts. It'll depend on the outside temp and the interior temp you set.

A full HV battery can get an hour of AC before the gas engine starts to recharge it. It will recharge it partially (equivalent of one regen green car) and the cycle would repeat every 7 minutes (1 min to recharge and 6 mins to drain). If you sleep for 5 hours, there will be a total of 34 times recharges after the initial full battery.

How much HV battery life will it affect? It will be hard to quantify but I would say minimum. It would be like regen braking 34-40 green leaf cars (shown on consumption screen) and then spending them. If you regen brake one leaf car every 10 highway miles, that's like taking away 400 miles life from the HV battery.

I dont think i asked the question the right way. On a plug in battery u get so many charge vs discharge before replacing battery. Do not know how non plug in priuses work as to charge discharge, however even though my car never fully charges discharges. I was wondering how many possible partial charges and recharges of the ac on car not driving can one get over a period of time before battery needs changing. Or maybe ill buy a jump start from walmart and plug in a portable fan. Thanks.

How is running the A/C 4-5 hours per day with the car parked considered harmful to the battery, compared to putting almost 400,000 miles on it????

Seriously, don't worry about the battery. It might even be beneficial, since that charge/discharge energy goes directly towards keeping the battery cool.

UPDATE: Amsoil is in, this will most likely be my last test before I reach 400000. Im looking to reach somewhere near 3000 before refilling, hopefully it will give me a little performance as well as some extra mpg. SMH.. I has always will keep u posted. The weather has dropped at least 20 degrees at night so I do not have to run ac, which is good. Anyway till next time.

Let us know the location where you reach 400k. We ought to put a milestone or should I say Priustone?

Thanks alot USB. Im really hoping this amsoil makes a difference, have not checked any levels yet. They claim 25000 before change of course changing the oil filter, however 9.80 a bottle x 5 = 49 plus 5 for filter. One problem I did not find out until I got home was there is a stipulation to the 25000. Of course its on the back under the label. Personal vehicles not operating under severe service. Up to 15000 miles turbo/supercharge, commercial, fleet excessive idle, vehicle over 100000 miles without prior use, short trip driving less 10 miles, towing, or get this dusty condition driving. Anyway I was willing to spend the extra 20. It was still windy however I managed to pull 49 mpg at 605 miles, does not feel any different than royal purple as far as power. The only thing for me to continue is does it burn less than RP. Will not know until I refill which should be in about 3 days. Until then later.

Your highway miles would not be "severe". I think you are an ideal candidate for Amsoil.

UPDATE: 394100 Checked oil level im at 1240 2nd day no noticeable change in level, I managed to get 51.1 as I arrived home. As far as power, its the same as RP, mpg is about the same also. Like I said the only concern as of now is does it burn less than RP and can I reach close to 25000( I am very sceptical seeing avg change with syn is 10-12000) so far she is looking good. Keep u posted.

Checked my oil level, Im at 1950. I have about 1 day or about 600 miles before I will begin to refill, It is about the same as Royal Purple. Like I said before there really isnt that much difference between the two other than the price 9.80 amsoil vs 8.50 royal purple. If I wasnt burning to where I need 5 quarts instead of 4 maybe amsoil would work since they say 25000 without the exceptions. I'll stay with royal purple for now when I finish the rest of this amsoil. Anyway I managed 51.2 when I got home. Anyway Im finished. I appreciate all the advice, I hope my postings made a difference or helped. I'll keep u updated when I reach 400000 or when I replace one or both of the batteries. Again thanks USBSEAWOLF for the postings. UPDATE: 394750.

At this rate, you'll reach 400k miles in 9 days. :)

I don't post a lot here but I read this thread all the time - every day, in fact.

Please keep us informed how it's going. I'm sure a lot of PCers are just like me and get a vicarious thrill out of your incredible, ongoing adventure (even if we don't contribute much to this thread). It's like a ride-along without the saddle sores. Thanks!

UPDATE: ALMOST THERE. Thanks for the encouragement. In that case, sorry for cutting the Amsoil short just felt for the price there wasn't that much difference than RP. However, while driving a thought came which might be beneficial to me and to whoever is in my situation. Initial investment Amsoil 40 for 4 quarts vs RP 35, out 5 dollars. Since im burning oil, im at 3000 with about half full and 12 ounces left, which should carry me close to 5000. Since Amsoil recommends 25000 if i change the filter at about 5000 without dropping the oil and keep refilling it might be cheaper in the long run. Just a thought. Keep u posted.

I just saw this one on Craigslist:

    2004 Prius with 395,000 miles!

[looks like it won't let me post the link because I'm a newbie. Perhaps another member can post. Just go to Orange County, CA Craigslist and search for "2004 Prius". It's posted on 8/15/11]
