You can absolutely lock the car with the fob inside.

The wife had her fob in the car, and I had mine inside the house. I didn't realize that her fob was in the car, and couldn't hear any protests the car may have made. I wanted to be sure the car was locked, so pressed the lock button on my fob a number of times, hoping I'd hear the car beep. Don't think I ever heard it beep, but the next morning she couldn't get into the car because it was locked, and we had to use my fob to unlock the car.

From the experience, I assume there is either some type of override if you insist enough, or the car just gets confused and eventually gives in. Yes - I'd have the car yelp at me numerous times when I've gotten out tried to lock and there was still a fob in the car, but apparently if you insist......

Hi. I'm new. Just wanted to say that my 08 does lock with the FOB inside but the hatch will unlock without another set of key that way you can't accidentally lock your keys in it... I assume that's why.

Then I would get a "car wash" too. Don't want to do my shower or laundry that way. Besides, what would the wax do to my "beautiful complexion" Plus, 0 degrees F and all wet sounds like a bad formula.
    Peace

I want to know if there is a way to lock my 2010 with the power on ? I was accustomed to warming the interior during cold weather for a few minutes (pre-prius days). Don't like to leave it on/running without the doors locked but I like getting into a ice cold car even worse.

As far as I know the only way to lock, or keep locked, the doors with the car (on) running is to use a remote start. A toasty, locked car at 20 degrees is nice.

I like to take the extra remote with me when I travel but do not want it to interfere with locking the doors when I stop for a rest or something to eat. If you wrap the remote in foil it won't keep you from locking the vehicle.

I just tried this and it works. You can lock one FOB in the car with the other FOB. I could not lock the FOB in the car using the door or hatch sensors.

I tried this (knowing the spare fob was in reach) "tried" to lock the door with the door handle sensor and it chirped and would not lock the door.

of course, if I was out in the middle of no where, middle of the night, downpouring rain, with my cell phone in the car and tried this it would lock in an instant. :p

Ehhhh! Wrong. My '07 is locked up tight with my daughter's purse and my keys inside. The hatch will not open.

You certainly can lock the FOB in your car. My wife was staying at a rest stop on a long trip and locked the doors from the inside switch, to nap. She then opened the door via the handle and go out for a second and when the door closed it locked with her keys and iPhone inside . AAA had to somehow get in with a rod....Stupid design on the 2010's that would let that happen.

You are suppose to have TWO smart keys for any of these cars. I just found out recently that you can lock the car despite having a key in the car. How? Have the other key "fob" in your hand and rather than use the door handle to lock it use the key fob remote. It will lock. However as noted here, I know of no way that you can purposely/accidentally lock a key in the car. My guess is if you can, you better take it to a dealer....

The Gen III does not have the button under the dash like the Gen II.
