I wouldn't be surprised if there were a subset of prius drivers(though statistically significant) that fell into this category.

I know some. Vaccines have been so effective that many people no longer remember how bad disease can be, so they fear the vaccine more than the disease. This perception will change, but only after more outbreaks.

How many of these parents routinely drive their children to places in the family automobile, as often as daily? The risk of disability or death they thereby expose their children to is far greater than the risks from vaccine, but the human mind has always been an atrocious risk assessment engine, giving too much weight to irrelevant factors and insufficient weight to critical ones.

That exceptions were granted not on the basis of physiology or medical susceptibility but how the parents "felt" constitutes, to my mind, a grossly irresponsible crime against community, especially in the case of vaccines against communicable diseases.

My kids - and the dog - have had all their shots, both for their sake and the community's. I know a number of people who get 'the flu shot' every year, but we tend not to. Thankfully, I'm sufficiently healthy that my body seems to fight those sorts of things off, without any ill effects. If and when I plan any exotic travel, I'll be getting whatever immunisations are necessary.

I wasn't aware that there were states allowing philosophical exemptions from vaccines, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
I'm thinking that there might be a higher percentage of Prius drivers out there that eschew vaccinations for their crumb-snatchers, but that the overall number is still pretty low. You're always going to have the crop circle folks out there.

I'm not much of a Big Government kinda guy, but I'm thinking that vaccinations for serious communicable diseases should be VERY non-optional. I'm also thinking that there is a list out there somewhere that's already been finely sifted, studied, and fought over that gives us a very good idea which diseases we should be vaccinating against.

So....I live in a country that will not permit me to remove fork reflectors from my motorcycle, but says it's OK if I choose not to vaccinate my kid against polio?

    Nice. :(

EDIT: I don't advocate removing DOT mandated reflectors from motorcycles BTW. I just used this as an example of my beloved government's schizophrenic regulating style.

The British researcher who linked vaccination with autism was unmasked as a data-inventing fraud awhile ago. Nevertheless, parents naturally want a cause (which cannot be supplied today) in hopes of a treatment, and reportedly some have been unmoved by the debunking of this guy, who probably caused the deaths of lots of kids.

I would guess that many of the "philosophical" objections to childhood vaccines come from this debacle.

Why is it that a 30 minute old baby needs to be injected with a Hep B, which is a shot to be used to protect you from a sexual transmitted disease in adults. Also the Hep B shot has Thermsol, AKA Mercury, as a preservative.

Also remember this if you are having a new kid anytime soon, they, doctors and nurses, do not ask if you want these shots, they just start injecting.

Thing is that you can't put you kid into public school if you do not have all shots.

BTW mercury in Thermsol was linked to epidemic increase in child autism cases, something from 1 in several thousands to 1 in 200, YMMV

Taken from Thimerosal in Vaccines Questions and Answers :

"Since 2001, all vaccines manufactured for the U.S. market and routinely recommended for children ≤ 6 years of age have contained no thimerosal or only trace amounts (≤ 1 microgram of mercury per dose remaining from the manufacturing process), with the exception of inactivated influenza vaccine. In addition, all of the routinely recommended vaccines that had been previously manufactured with thimerosal as a preservative (some formulations of DTaP, Haemophilus influenzae b conjugate (Hib), and hepatitis B vaccines) had reached the end of their shelf life by January 2003."

the options; forego the vaccines and remove the 1/10th of one percent chance of a allergic reaction to the vaccine or allow my child to attend public school with a potentially un-vaccinated child and risk being exposed to a half dozen diseases, many of which have a 5-20% mortality rate or risk of permanent hearing, sight or other sensory damage?

ok, that is supposed to be a choice?

i believe in free speech and the right to choose your course in life. but i also understand the basic limitation of Mankind's ability to fully determine the correct path in life. we all need help making these decisions and in some cases there should be a very very very very narrow range of options...

let me know if another "very" is required to get my point accross

There is NO mercury in vaccines any more. The link between vaccines and autism has been revealed as a hoax. (now they are exploring other possible connections such as anti depressants and pain medications).

The Waldorf school system promotes anti vaccination theory as the founder believed illnesses such as Chicken Pox, etc. Helps a person work through issues from their previous life. Now that the schools are publicly funded, there are more exemption papers than ever before within the public school sector. One may file exemptions due to Religious beliefs.

    Sick, if you ask me.

Have you ever seen someone die of Hep B? I have. It's not pretty. You liver fails, you get increased portal vein pressure which causes your belly to fill with fluid. Your esophageal veins rupture so you're having massive melena(that's clotted smelly crap) and you're vomitting and choking on your own blood. These veins don't clot because your clotting factors are made by the liver which has failed. So they get gasteroenterologist that shoves a balloon down your esophagus to try to stop the bleeding so you can live long enough for your loved ones to say adios. There's blood everywhere. You're exposing the people who are trying to save you to your contaminated blood. Your draining the blood banks because you can't keep and ounce of your own blood for more than 24 hours. God forbid people have actually created a vaccine that keeps people from going through this.

Not true. At the birth of my latest granddaughter, the doctors asked before administering any medication. Her parents declined anything relating to disease transmission from the mother since the mother is clean and they know it. There was no argument or debate; their wishes were respected.

I've had many heated discussions with people about vaccination here in Montreal.
99% of them did not have at least high school biology knowledge.

Plus they run to see doctors for things that I take two aspirins and wait a day.

The best one I heard was that even the doctors themselves don't know the contents and manufacture quality of the vaccines they inject.

If a parent does not want their kid vaccinated, require the parent to pay a no exemptions public health care fee for "critical disease" unvaccinated child monitoring. Even if it is just $5 / year till the kids become adults, this slight economic incentive would have a huge effect, possibly enough to resolve the critical thresholds of insufficent population vaccination.

Note that a lot of blood collection efforts have found a T-shirt or something minor makes a noticable difference.

I think we should require unvaccinated children to be home schooled.

We live in a close society where disease transmission is imminent. Those who shun vaccines and thereby shun their civic duty to society, must themselves be shunned. How about a "NV" for no vaccines tattooed on their foreheads, thereby allowing the rest of society the choice of whether or not to associate with those who shun society. Your choices and rights stop at the tip of my nose. Don't want to be vaccinated? Fine with me. But the cost is you must stay home and not mix with the rest of us.

The bigger problem is with parents not having their children vaccinated. The other problem is a lot of those parents might already be covered in tattoos, so the NV would be buried in all the other warnings.
