After numerous bouts with trying to burn gen 4/gen 5 9.1/10.1 software and not getting it to work, I decided to take the plunge and purchased a used original gen 5 9.1 disc

it loaded up just fine...wonder if I could copy it?

If you have the disks available, make a block by block copy as a back-up and see if it work ?

So refresh my memory......if I have a 2008 Prius and I purchase an original gen 5 9.1 disc, will that give me a newer database than the one that came with my 2008? By how many years?

And if it is a newer database, how much does this disc cost?

the 2008 prius should've come with 7.1 which means my disc is 2 years newer (2009-2010 data)

I will try to copy this weekend...if it works....I will start a list as to whom needs copies and I will forward via UPS.

THe disc is $199 at Toyota..I paid $60 (which is what I felt it was worth)

If the backups do work, then indeed sign me up on the waiting list!

I've tried burning a 9.1 and a 10.1 from links I found here, both from a Lite-On burner using Verbatim discs, and while they did update the Agree display page, they both failed to update the maps. I'll try to provide any other information if I come across it.

Hi. I'm new to this forum.
So, all I want to do is update my map. What else besides the map does the dvd do/update/change?

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but I think you will find the gen5 DVD reader in the Prius will simply only read factory pressed, silver disks (not any form of writable disks). I would be happy to be proven wrong.

The reports I have read say that the gen5 drive in the Prius is the only one with this "problem". Gen4 drives in the Prius seem to work. Gen5 drives in other Toyota/Lexus cars seem to work.

    Good luck.

I don't think there is an inability in the reader of gen 5 dvd units, because I was able to make a fully functional copy of a 7.1 disc. The inability only occurred with the 9.1 disc. It is interesting that the powers that be should decide to implement a form of copy protection in the firmware of the gen 5 and not others. I believe the limitation is caused by the firmware checking the sector scheme of the disc --- if it is the scheme of a burned disc, then no go.

Interesting. I have the gen5 stock 7.1 disk in my 2008 now. Maybe I'll try to replicate your copying of the 7.1 disk.

Can you give me details of what worked for you? What brand of media, what burning software, book type, etc.

Sure. Just pulled out the old 7.1 copy that I used in my 2006 prius. Note, I purchased an OEM 7.1 as my source, and only made the copy because I was paranoid of a valet stealing my OEM disk.

It is a Verbatim DVD+R DL and I used a Macbook Pro running Toast Titanium 8.

I have read posts about setting the book type, but if I recall correctly, I just used the copy setting defaults of Toast.

I tried many times to burn the 9.1 and have not ever had any luck.

Oh, one more thing...the dealership that sold my 9.1 OEM said that once one puts a 9.1 disk in, then a prior disk will never work again. My assumption is that once one puts a 9.1 OEM diskette in, it upgrades the firmware of the reader, and this includes code that checks that the formatting scheme is that of a factory pressed disk as opposed to a burned disk. If the dealer is right about not being able to revert to a disk prior to 9.1 after 9.1 has been installed, then your experiment is meaningful if you have not installed 9.1 OEM.

Thanks for the info. Mine has never seen a disk other than the factory 7.1 disk it came with so it should be a good test.

First I will try to burn a copy of the 7.1 factory disk and see if that works. When I eventually purchase a 9.1 (or 10.1) version OE disk I'll see if I can figure out how to edit the files on the disk such that the only the 7.1 firmware is present on the frankenstein'd DVD. It will be interesting to see if the 7.1 firmware will be able to read the 9.1 data. Since I will have a true OE 9.1 disk in hand, if it doesn't work I can simply plug the true disk in and everything should work out okay. That's my thought at the moment anyway.

I was able to successfully make a copy of my factory stock 7.1 gen5 nav disk. I use windows so I tried Imgburn first. It complained about the layer splits not being optimum and refused to burn the disk. Next I tried using DVDFab. I used the Clone mode which is found under DVD Copy. That worked prefectly.

I didn't have any Verbatim media on hand so I used the Ritek DVD+R DL media that I did have. I'll keep using the copy in the car and see if it has any problems.

I'll need to acquire a OE 9.1 or newer gen5 nav disk for my next set of tests. Anyone know where I can get one for cheap?

Here is what Imgburn had to say about the factory disk...

Someone has to be the wet blanket and point out the obvious: This software and data are copyrighted - distributing this to others is illegal.

From a more practical standpoint, Toyota employees often read these forums. I would feel a little funny making offers like this where they can be read by Toyota employees.

End of lecture, but you have been warned.

Funny, that was the first thing I thought about, qbee42, when I read the guy was going to copy the Navigation DVD and then sell them!

People, don't leave paper trails of your criminal intent. It may seem "harmless" to you, but it is illegal.
