Well, Bruiser, a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser, is burning 12.4 l/100 km highway and 12.8 l/100 km city while -my- foot is controlling the accelerator. That's 29 to 30 MPG US. I thought it wasn't bad, considering the vehicle weights 5000 lb or so, is a VERY large non-aerodynamic box, and has a lot of power. I drive at normal speeds, accelerate at normal rates, keeping up with or passing other vehicles as required. I'm NOT trying to "hypermile". So on the FJ Cruiser forum other owners are getting 12-20 US MPG. Those getting 20 think they are doing well! Pearl has taught me well! Bruiser is used to go places Pearl can't, or to go anywhere when Pearl can't due to weather/road conditions. Needless to say, Bruiser doesn't get used unless really needed, as Pearl averages in the 4.5 to 4.7 l/100 km range.
yep ... 18 19mpg was the very best we'd ever get from our 4x4 exploader when trying really really hard. Now, our AWD SUV 400h Lexus takes us places when the Prius' small amount of limited abilities prevail. The hybrid Lexus basibally doubles the Exploader's average. Woo hoo! .
http://calculator-converter.com/l_100km_mpg_convert_mpg_to_l_per_100_km.php If the OP was really getting 29-30 miles/US gallon with the FJ, I would conclude that 1) he measured this while going downhill only; or else 2) a friend playing a practical joke was adding some fuel to his tank, from time to time.
Dave you've mixed up km/L with L per 100km. Yes 12.5 km/L is about 29 MPG, but sadly 12.5 L per 100km is only about 19 MPG. You might like to go to the file library and download my simple converter program. It converts lots of stuff and will show you your fuel consumption in all the different units. See : http://priuschat.com/forums/file-library/69451-simple-fuel-consumption-converter-calculator.html
Sadly, the effort to lower expectations has been successful. Combine that with all the advertising of just highway MPG, it's easy convince people things are better than they really are. .
Don't know how I made the error but you are correct. It's around 20 MPG US. I used the conversion at Online Conversion - Fuel Consumption Conversion. Must have been blind when I entered the numbers the first time. It's still better than the anti-Prius (2001 Nissan Pathfinder AWD LE) which used 14 to 17 l/100 km. And Bruiser is running regular fuel, whereas the anti-Prius worked best on premium. But you see why Pearl is the preferred mode of transportation.
