I have 2005 prius, and the inner fender liner on the driver's side needs to be replaced. The clips came loose and the loosened liner had been rubbing against the tire. I'm wondering if replacing the inner fender liner would be a DIY job. I'd like to save money and don't want to take it to a dealer or mechanic unless I'd have to. It seems like it would be a relatively simple job if you had the correct hardware. Does anyone have experience with this or know a good place to get the fender liner online? Thanks for your input
Yes, replacing the inner fender liner and the associated fasteners can be DIY. This would be easier to do if you raise up that corner of the car and remove the tire first. While you are in there, you can see the coolant heat recovery canister, CHRS pump, and one of the three engine coolant drain valves. This is of interest if the pump fails or if you want to replace the engine coolant at a future date. I buy my Toyota parts from toyotaworld.com but if you are interested in buying a used part, you can check eBay Motors to find salvage yards that specialize in Prius. I suggest that you take a good look at the existing liner to see if it can be reused, or if it has been damaged to the point that it needs to be replaced.
alright that is good news, I appreciate your input. You mentioned a couple other parts that would be accessible with the fender off; I'm afraid I may also need to replace one of those as well, as there is a loud obnoxious whining noise from there whenever the car is shut of or turned on. I'm making another thread asking about that problem. I think it may be the pump.
Is it possible to do it on the passager side as well??? I ran into one of those blow-out tires that litter the freeway and Tore my fender liner... I just dont know how to replace it, would it be easy to do?? Thanks for your help!!
Yes, it is certainly possible, and easy to replace the front passenger-side fender liner - if you can raise up that corner of the car so that the tire hangs down and is out of the way, and you have the appropriate metric sockets and socket wrench. You will probably need to remove a portion of the engine "under cover" on that side of the car so that you can remove the fender liner.
My daughter drove over a truck tire that blew in front of her. I have the inner fender on the way but I don't know what clips I will need to install it or where to get them? Any assistance or photos or dwgs. showing the install would be great!
The source for the mounting hardware would be your local Toyota dealer's parts dept. If you are saying that the original fender liner ripped out of the car so that the clips are lost, just look at the fender liner and mounting hardware on the other side of the car, which is basically a mirror image. Then you can see what is required.
Easy DIY. Just bought it all off ebay. $10 for liner and $15 for two types of clips. <$30! Will do this weekend.
