I believe that the 2010 Prius is the only car that does not have any belts, i.e. alternator/ac/serpentine etc. Is there any other cars out there with no belts besides the Nissan Leaf? alfon
Chevy Volt - pretty much most cars that are hybrid - since they run AC etc from the HV battery pack - no need for a belt.......
Some hybrids still have traditional A/C systems. Most hybrids still have traditional belted water pumps. .
John's correct. 2nd gen Prius still had a belt and 1st gen Prius had a belt driven AC compressor along w/some other Honda hybrids. i was waiting for someone to say it... hehe.. as adamace1 said.. it is the only beltless car... or at least that's what it was published as when released. so.. it and the leaf... and the tesla?.. and any other EV?... shrug... but still the only mainstream car.. haha
There's still a chain inside, looping around the crankshaft and the two valve cam shafts up top. I think that's it though. The alternatives for that torque transfer are a toothed belt (such as Honda uses a lot, prone to stretch, oil foul, requires replacement around 100000 km~ intervals), or gears.
on a genII there is also the final drive chain the goes from psd to the wheel differential in the genIII it's a gear...
Well, I like the idea of not having to change the serpentine belt, or other belts every 30,000-60,000 miles. alfon
Your wasting your money if you are buying new belts every 30-60k. Most belts last at least 100k i have seen some 8 years old and more than 100k.
CT200h and the upcoming Prius v have no belt or clutch. Maybe Tesla roadster? Not sure about Fusion hybrid or the upcoming C-max hybrid. .
I much prefer the chain system. It probably will last the life of the car. Replacing those toothed belts is expensive, espically in my 2003 Jetta TDI Wagon. alfon
