Hello! I was reading a lot of Threads here, but there are two numbers of maximum spinning speed of the MG1. I read 42mph and 62mph, can anyone say me, which one is the right? It is actually for a Prius P1, but I think the maximum spinnig speed is constant at all Prius, right? I think there is a software limit of about 6500Rpm, which means about 42mph, but is this only a software limit, or also a hardware limit? Thanks in advance, Manuel
Under normal driving it's limited to 6500 RPM. One way you can exceed this is to place it in neutral, before you hit 66 km/h, on a downhill run. I had thought that once you did this there was no limit (other than your speed) but recently here someone said that, even in neutral, the engine starts if you exceed about 85 km/hr. So if that's true it would add a second limit at about 8500 RPM under coasting conditions.
uart, I asked Hobbit about this once, he said the engine doesn't start, he was really sure of it, too. There was just one person who said it did, and it was pEEf. So... I don't want to test it out myself, I stay on the safe side with this.
So this means I shouldn't exceed 70km/h right? I am going to make an PHEV Conversion with the P1, and so the more speed in EV the better it would be, this is why I had asked this. Thanks Manuel
Yeah good point Mike. I'd always thought that the engine didn't start if you were in "N" until pEEf said otherwise. He seemed to know a lot about the inner workings of the Prius so I believed it, but like you say a lot of other knowledgeable people have said otherwise, so best to be cautious. BTW. It shouldn't be to hard for someone with a scangauge test this definitively, should it?
Hello! Has Toyota changed something in the MG1 so that the first Generation has the limit at 6.500 Rpm and the second at 10.000 Rpm? Manuel
The limit was changed, yes, so gen3 allows 46mph travel before MG1 is at max speed. For the PHV MG1 will see 9,500RPM at 62mph, so these speeds "should" be safe. i suspect one upleasant side effect would be a bumpy engine start, since MG1 will instantly drop from -9,500rpm to -5,800 RPM on engine start.
Hello! But the question is, has Toyota only changed the limits, or also the hardware. So is it just a Software Limit exchange, or not. So do you mean the absoulte maximum in the P1 is 6500 Rpm, and not 10000Rpm like in the P2/P3 ?
You're right, uart, we could definitely test it. If I knew for sure my car would be safe, I have no problem testing, I have the terrain to do so here safely without much traffic around. Since I'm not that confident, though, I won't do it, at least until there's more information. Gotta treat Wentworth with respect We could check with Hobbit, he seemed to not be concerned going quite fast in a neutral engine-off glide. I'll send him an e-mail to make sure I heard him right and see if he can chime in or even test it if he's confident there's no problem.
