Performance of 3rd generation vs. 2nd generation, which one is really faster?

    Let's step out of this crazy boxing ring for a moment and realize that we are comparing the performance of a prius with another prius. Doesn't that make you laugh?!?!

    Looks like we all just need a group hug :grouphug: here and move on. We are all part of the "pzev" family for heaven sakes! woot woot!

    That is unfortunate. But, lets go over the facts of the video for others:

    1. Both car had a good start...more or less same reaction time.

    2. It is not hard to launch the Prius. No launch control. No side stepping the clutch.

    3. It is also not hard to keep the foot all the way down on the gas pedal in a Prius to the specify speed. No power shifting involved.

    4. At 1:25 in the video, the race began and both got off to a fairly equal start.

    5. At 1:39 in the video, it is clear that the 3rd gen is pulling away from the 2nd gen. Both cars were more or less neck and neck...and then the 3rd gen pulled away. (Both drivers were clearly concentrating on the road and not laughing as if this was a joke race.) Again, this has NOTHING to do with reaction time. This is all about the machine doing its thing.

    6. TFLcar.com is an enthusiast site that review cars...so, this is not your backyard pissing game among high school kids.

    7. Different driver? Sure (but see #8!!). But, same road. Same conditions otherwise. Why do you need instrumentation for a simple race like this among "simple-to-operate" cars. This is not a Mustang GT vs. M3 race where you have to modulate the throttle to avoid axle hopping or proper engagement of launch control.

    8. Actually, if you want to nit-pick, i think that the 3rd gen was at a disadvantage because its driver was kinda overweight vs. the "Stig". :D


    This is hilarious!!! Seriously?! Classic case of "The pot calling the kettle black!" If anything, it is you who are more "troll-like" than me. Hmmm, this is a thread in 3rd gen forum. You do NOT own a 3rd gen, do you? Do you see me running over to the 2nd gen forum to post crap?? :rolleyes: I am not saying that you are a troll, but damn, dude, do you like to put your foot in your mouth with every post??!! :rolleyes:

    Yet, you seemingly still respond...at least have the substance to do what you claim!:nod:

    One other minor possible advantage for the 2nd gen in the video...this video was created in 9/2009. Therefore, the 3rd gen in the video was likely low-mileage, whereas the 2nd gen's powertrain was probably broken-in already.

    First off I guess I must like the way my foot tastes. Second since when does one need to stick to there specific gen of vehicle to voice an opinion on this or any site? Third I was merely stating what I have observed over the months of being on here that there are certain people on here who cannot accept other peoples opinions without going off the deep end.

    I could give two sh#ts what you or anyone else here thinks about my opinion. But I at least let people give there opinions without attacking them for doing so :)

    It's pretty funny (or not funny at all.. :( )if you stop and think about it!!
    I got in the middle of a 300-post insult laden fur-ball on another forum (V-Rod) because, since the "D and R" models have mid controls, they're not real V-Rods, which have the usual forward controls...
    The real sad thing about that argument (and this one) is that all V-Rods are held in the deepest contempt by the owners of the other...or "real" Harleys, which (for now) are all air cooled. There's a lesson here.

    So you have to ask yourself....with all of the crap that Prius drivers have to put up with from the rest of the motoring world, why get into one of these circular firing squads??? :rolleyes:
    The performance number deltas (as published) aren't worth quibbling about. Seems to me that a good driver in a G2 can smash a poorer driver in a G3. Usually...the loud braggers aren't as proficient as the quieter "do-ers." :D

    Alibi round: That truck is a monster! Did I see that right??? You knocked down a 13.1 with that reaction time????? Wow….. :eek:

    Whether or not a good driver can beat a bad driver is not the point of this thread...at least, from what i read. We're not exactly talking about driver's skills here. We're talking about Prius G3 vs. Prius G2 and which is FASTER. Machine vs. machine. Sure, 1 seconds at 10 seconds (0-60) ain't much, but 1 seconds or 1 milliseconds still defines the purpose of this thread. And in the video noted above, as long as both vehicles get off to a decent start, the G3 will significantly pull away from a G2.

    Does it matter? Not really...most of us did not buy the Prius to drag race. Just like most of my former off-road local group did not buy their rig to drag race on the streets. But, that is NOT the point of this discussion. The question, at least to my understanding, was brought up about which gen was faster...and indeed, the answer is clear as day.

    I was thinking this, SWMBO's Gen 2 feels like it's in a less powerful PWR mode as standard.
    I.e. the accelerator pedal is more responsive than my Gen 3 in NORMAL mode but not as responsive as my Gen 3 in PWR mode.

    First time I opened this thread. No wonder it's already 5 pages - It's another "Thai vs. everyone else" thread, LOL! I have nothing against Thai anymore, it's just slightly amusing to see this. :)

    Now, to get on topic, I would put the Gen III engine into the Gen II body. Mmmm.

    Actually....the original question hasn't even been addressed.
    I haven't seen or heard about terminal velocity tests for either car.
    You know....top speed?
    Like...which one is faster?

    Zero to sixty tells you which one is quicker.
    Zero to 1320' tells you which one is the "fastest" on a dragstrip.

    Everybody is flopping and twitching over performance benchmarks, and arguing over the difference between six and half a dozen.
    I haven't seen any data on the OPs original question.... :D

    Well, if G3 is faster in the video (not sure what terminal speed was) AND that G3 has higher HP, then what makes you think that the G2 has a chance?

    What is the top speed of G2?? 103 mph?

    Top speed of G3 is 112 mph i think.

    I totally agree with you man. It's rather silly to squibble with other Prius owners about such minor issues.

    Yeah, the truck eventually ran 12.3@110mph with a 1.80 60'. I should have tried for an 11 that night but I was told not to blow up the truck because it was slated for a magazine article. The magazine thing never panned out and I didn't get my 11. I sold the truck after we put the twin-turbo setup on it. It was putting down approx. 550rwhp when it ran low 12s. Imagine what it would have ran with the 719rwhp setup. :)

    Would it be appropriate to say the Gen II is in the equivalent of the Gen III "Normal" mode, which is more responsive than the Gen III ECO Mode?

    From the times I have driven a Gen II, this is what I recollect.

    First of all, BHP isn't the sole determination for speed.
    I can hop on my motorcycle, with its 125BHP and take down a Camaro...on a track. He'll get me on a longer course, because (A) my testicular fortitude will run out before hit speed limiter kicks in, and (B ) his aforementioned speed limiter may be higher than my rated 155MPH Vt.

    Secondly---you have to get the ponies on the asphalt. The same Camaro can give me grief if we're both on a track and he's running slicks, which will allow him a harder launch. And then there's reaction time.

    Yeah...on paper, the G3 should be faster...and quicker...maybe.
    Toyota lies a lot.
    My MDF says I'm getting 53MPG on my current tank. Anybody with time in type knows (or should know) that that number is off by 5-percent.

    What's 5-percent of a G2's 0-60 time? (like, 6-tenths of a second?)
    If you line up 100 G2's and 100 G3's, bench test them all, and then publish the resulting numbers, I think that you'll find out that there is a difference in performance between the two types.....but those differences fall well within what you could make up for by being a better driver.

    It's just like on the range.
    Just 'cause you have a "better" weapon...don't make you a better shooter....:)

    And your analogy is not even close to this discussion...we're not comparing a cycle to a Camaro.

    Then you're just reading published data about other people's accomplishments.... :D

    THAT's why they spend all that money on drag strips.
    Otherwise...all you would need is a few magazines and a comfy chair.

    Wow, did not know how hard it is to launch a Prius?!! Luckily for us, we have launch control to avoid axle hop. And damn, you have to get the shifting just right too!! Because if you shift just before 60 mph, then you lose a second! And with so much torque on demand, you better watch the 1-2 shift and modulate the pedal to avoid laying too much rubber on asphalt!!

    PS. you need to look at the video again...1:39 is all machine baby! :) Oh yeah, in my previous life, i did have a little track experience in my BMW M3 SMGII....

    These are the times clocked with the Prius 2nd gen and 3rd gen:

    The only problem I have with these values and based on my personal experience, is that we don't know how charged the battery is when they are taking the times. When the battery is only at 2-3 bars, I have noticed that the "reaction" is far slower to when the battery is full (6 bars or more)...
