I bought my 2010 Prius last October and I am LOVING IT!! Anyways, when I purchased my Prius, I was handed a card from the service department stating that my first factory service is due either 5,000 miles or the date of April 22, 2011 (6 months after purchasing my Prius.)

At the end of April, I made the appointment for this service with only 3900 miles on the car... but when I got there, the service manager said I didn't have to come in until 5,000 miles.

Now this is very confusing...I thought it was 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. That is how I have been doing it for the past 15 years except from March 2008-October 2010 when I owned a 2008 Honda Fit Sport which told me when it was time to service the vehicle (Yes! Every car I have owned has been a Honda. EXCEPT for my first car which was a 1979 Toyota Corolla Liftback with a removable sunroof. How I loved that car...white exterior with that cool vinyl blue interior.)

As of today, I have 4339 miles on my car. Is the service manager wrong? Should I have insisted on getting my factory service done at the six month interval?
    I would appreciate anyone's opinion and help..thanks

As your manual says, it's now 1 year/10K miles if you use 0W20 synthetic oil. More frequently under adverse conditions.

I have a 2011 Prius III, and had my 5,000 mile service last month, expecting an oil change. They told me it has synthetic oil that does not need changing until 10,000 miles. I don't know if this has anything to do with the #of months...

Hmmm. Guess I should have read my owners manual. :)

I have a similar thread running concurrently in the 2010 Gen III General Forum. You may want to look at some of the comments made there as it compliments this one.

My question is: Then why does the Service Reminder appear on our display screens every 4500 miles? Essentially, my dealership says they inspect the vehicle and rotate the tires. Is that all???

5K miles is simply a tire rotation, and quick inspection - nothing else (except a car wash if you like). Bottom line - tires every 5K, Oil every 10K.....

There's nothing stopping you changing the oil every six months, if you prefer. If you want to do the oil every 6 months, the dealership should comply, it's your car. Unles it's some sort of gratis service, then it gets complicated, but you should still be able to sort something out.

FWIW: 6 months or 8000 km is still the spec. in Canada.

I have always rotated my tires every 5,000 miles and get a 4 wheel alignment every 15,000 miles anyways....thanks guys for your help.

According to the first Maintenance Log Chart, 5,000 miles or 6 months, it does list the tire rotations and quick inspection.
And the oil change is ONLY for repeated short trips (5 miles or less) in temperatures below 32 degrees, also for vehicles with excessive idling and/or low speed long distance driving such as police, taxi cab, door to door delivery use.

Then at 10,000 OR 12 months, that is when the oil change is due....I should have read the Warranty and Maintenance Guide more carefully.

Since you have a 2010 you should have got a maintenance supplement that indicated the service interval of 10K/1 year OCI.
