I have searched for this answer but there is so much information that I couldn't understand any of it...So here are my two questions re: what I think you call the 'battery pack' on my 2011 Prius IV: 1) So, in ten words or less, how long will the 'big' battery last realistically? 2) I saw somewhere that there is a 'special battery warranty' in some states (I'm in NY).....Is this a mandated warranty by the state, and if so, how do I find out about the NYS warranty? There are numerous Prius with over 300,000 miles on their original packs. The hybrid battery in the Prius has a warranty of 8 years - 100,000 miles. If you bought and registered the car in CA, NY, NJ, MA, CT, RI, PA or ME (these states have California-standard emissions laws), the warranty is automatically extended to 10 years - 150,000 miles.
Paradox is correct. The HV battery warranty length is spelled out in your warranty booklet and NY state should be mentioned in the California emission warranty section.
Thank you very much. As you said, the warranty book contains that info however, the wording always says 'due to defects etc etc' and does not imply normal usage. Further, the NYS language says 'if your car meets/has the California emissions etc. I guess two more questions come from this language: 1) Does a NYS (bought and registered) meet the Ca. emissions thingie they speak of and; 2) if the battery dies of normal wear and tear after approx 8 yrs, is it covered since it wasn't a result of 'manufacturing defects etc'. Apologies, but this is the stuff the confuses me. J
You REALLY don't have to sweat the battery. There....I did it in 8. (10 keystrokes if you count the underscore and italics.) NYS isn't a CARB state, and if the esteemed legislature in your state decided to make it one today, I don't think that it would be retroactive to your '11----so you can forget that additional coverage. Your battery is covered for 100,000 miles IIRC, so worrying about it before you get close to that mileage is somewhat pointless, unless you already have a bunch of miles on your '11. Other than the 12-volt battery, which did expire on mine...and is somewhat expensive to replace (200 bucks or so) I haven't seen any battery issues for G3 Priuses. This covers the '10 and '11 model years, and I've read where some '10 owners are getting close to the 100K mark. Really....life is short! Don't sweat the battery thing until you have to.
If the battery dies in less than 8 years or 100,000 miles from you just using the car regularly then they will replace it. The theory is that the battery should last at least that long, so if it doesn't then it was a manufacturing defect and it will be replaced. However, if a garbage truck runs into the back of your Prius and destroys the battery then that's not a manufacturing defect and it won't be covered.
