was wondering if its possible to use Lithium Battery with a BMS setup to connect parallel to the Lexus CT200h to extend its range ? newbie here, read some threads and seems like its possible. Anyone tried it with their Prius ? thanks
Found references to using existing Prius NIMH with BMS+ or BMP plus management. is it possible to run BMS+ with a non plugin setup ie connect parallel with existing OEM battery pack + ICE to recharge ? any thread with a parts list ? thanks
My understanding, is that NiMH and LiON charge very differently, so you would need separate chargers.
They also have differing discharge curves, so you would need a buffer between the battery packs during operation. Essentially, you would need another inverter. Tom
www.enginer.us will sell you a unit for the lexus, i'm sure. Electrically it's all sorted, but you would need to figure out where to mount it since i don't think the cargo area is the same shape/size as the prius.
Replacing the OEM battery assembly with a compatible A123 batt assembly and a BMS+ will not make you gain a lot of energy for a $$$ trade-off. If you want to go the A123 route, you will have to go BIGGER in capacity and externally plug-in for the best results. This set-up has been done and test proven already. NOT cheap tough. Are you NY'er?
FYI, In my experience the ThunderSky batteries get 95% of the performance of the A123 cells, at about half the cost. IMO-only use 1 type of battery, or you're going to have to build 2 BMS + buffer which in no way that I know could be cheaper, or have better performance.
got a reply from BMS Plus designer and he says no support other than for Prius at the moment. I'm not an electronics guy so got to put this on cold storage until someone more inclined tries it. but looking at the BMS prius setup should be viable with a Prius NiMH batteries. just need some wiring diagrams for the ECU setup.
