I HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE DOT FOR THE FOG LIGHTS CRACKING BECAUSE OF TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS...HERE IS THE LINK IF YOU WISH TO DO SO.... http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/
Would you care to tell us more about the problem and what other solutions you tried before resorting to filing a complaint with the DOT? Did you contact your service dept.? Did you contact Toyota? How many miles on your car? How do you know it's due to temperture variations and not from rock strikes or something else? I'm not necessarily doubting your, but getting pissed off and sending a complain to the DOT before attempting other solutions isn't, likely, the best approach.
I think this may be the thread that 'stimulated' him... http://priuschat.com/Fog-lights-Cracked-t12504.html
I'm not exactly sure what use the fog lights are anyhow. They only come on when you have the headlights on and the HID headlights are so bright that you can barely tell that they are on anyhow. In fog, the reflection from the HIDs is so bright that I'm not sure what the fog lights would accomplish. It's not like they negate the HIDs' reflections. I don't bother to use mine and I couldn't care less if they're cracked.
I'd care if I was trading in the car someday. Since I plan to drive this car until I win the lottery or one of us dies, I'm not too excited either...
Any bulbs that we can use that would simulate their 55W output but use less power? It seems heat's a major problem here and it is. I've had both headlights and foglights on on one particular day and when I got to school, the headlight cover was cool but the foglight ones were hot enough to burn you.
I had a mechanic at a local body shop check the bulbs, and he said it definitely was not due to debris off the highway. There were no signs of impact, and I use the lights a lot at night. Recently there have been large temperature variations where I live. I will be bringing my car to Toyota to hopefully get them changed under warranty. I also know a lot of people outside of Prius Chat who have experienced this problem in the past. Since it is a recurring issue....consumers should not have to pay for the $300+ fog lights when they are defective.
Both of mine cracked...no sign of impact...replaced under warrantee... NO dealer hassles...no complaint letter.
Well, I would agree if they were warrantied for 100K, but since they are under the 3/36, and could be attributed to road hazard, I'd like DOT/NHSA to know about it. I couldn't get my dealer to acknowlege that my heat storage pump is abnormally noisy, let alone getting it fixed.
