Has anyone compiled a list of all the known hacks & easter eggs available on the Prius (such as the hidden "override" that allows you to input destinations while driving and the reverse-beep shutoff)?

    Thanks in advance!

Well, anyhow, you seem to know the override that allows you to give in destinations while driving? Curious to know whether this works also at a EU Prius, turning off beebs in the EU-version is not possible.

So what is the override to enter a destination while driving?

    Navigation Motion Override

    1)Push MENU Button on bezel

    2)Tap the VOLUME soft button

3)Tap top left of screen (where the speaker icon is), then the bottom left, then top left again and finally the bottom left again.

**Perform these taps in rapid sequence. Do not be tentative or it might not work.

    4)The Service Menu should appear.

5)Press and hold the OVERRIDE soft button until it beeps and is highlighted.

Full NAV function should now be available until you shut down the car. This can be engaged while in motion but must be repeated each time the car is restarted.

Be cautious experimenting within the Service Menu as you could cause yourself some problems with your Prius is you push the wrong combination of buttons.

    Tachometer Signal
Found it at vfaq.net (http://www.vfaq.net) which has an image in the mods-Buttons/Guages section, 04_TachECM.gif (http://www.vfaq.net/pics/04_TachECM.gif) contributed by Wayne Brown, which shows pin5 to be a tach signal wire which should drive a standard tachometer.

    Disabling Traction Control
WARNING: The shop manual apparently states in no uncertain terms that this procedure must NOT be used to drive the car as damage to the transmission could occur due to traction control being defeated.
    • Follow the sequence below (quickly - within 60 seconds)
    • Set Ign switch to ON, not READY (Power button twice, no brake)
    • While still in "P" fully depress the gas pedal two times.
    • Select "N" fully depress the gas pedal two times.
    • Select "P" fully depress the gas pedal two times.
(LCD display will indicate a !Car! in upper left corner of screen)
    • Turn key directly to "start" to start the engine (brake+start button)
It forces the ICE to run continuosly and defeats the traction control system. Normal operation returns after turn off and reboot. Unlike EV-Mode this is strictly a diagnostic function and should not be used under normal situations.

    Disabling Navigation Lock-Out
When moving faster than a very slow speed, many of the navigation setting buttons are disabled (grayed-out). This sequence will override the lock-out until the car is powered off.
    • Press the "Menu" button (hardware button)
    • Press the "Voice" icon on the display
    • Press the upper left corner of the display, where the speaker icon is
    • Press the lower left corner
    • Press the upper left corner again
    • Press the lower left corner again
    • The screen should change to a diagnostic screen
    • Hold the "Override" button for several seconds until it changes to black
Warning: do not play with things on this screen that you don't know about!

    "Programming New Keys"

    STEPS:
    1. Begin by sitting in the driver seat with all the doors shut.
    2. Insert your working master (black) key in the ignition.
    3. Very Quickly, turn the key from "LOCK" to "ON" 5 times. (You will end with the key in the "LOCK" position)
    4. Immediately, open and close the driver door 6 times very quickly. (End with the door closed)
    5. Immediately, remove your working Master Key and insert your new Master Key
    6. Turn the key to the "ON" position and leave it there while you wait for 1 minute.
    7. After the minute, if you want to program another key, just remove the first one and insert the next one, turning it to "ON" and leaving it in position for 1 minute.
    8. When you are through programming keys, just take the last one out, open and then close the driver door to lock in the programming, and your done :)

Programming Sub Keys (Grey) is done the same way except you turn the master key 4 times before you open and close the door 5 times. Then insert the sub key, turn to the "ON" position, and wait your minute. Finish by removing the key and opening and closing the door 1 time as before.

You can erase all the keys and start over by turning a working master key 6 times and then opening and closing the door 7 times. Then remove the key and reprogram again.

Remember : You only have a few seconds to perform each maneuver so don't waste time. You will know when you have done it right when you insert the blank key and the security light on the radio stops blinking. If it does not work, try completing the sequence faster, time yourself. And don't worry, if it doesn't work the first time, just do it again :)
**It is our understanding, according to the book, you can have 2 master keys and 1 sub key, however, we are aware of one gentleman who was able to program 4 masters and 2 subs. We currently have 3 masters and 1 sub.**

Adding Extra Remote Transmitters or Replacing a lost or damaged one

Following is an explanation and the procedures for each of the possible programming functions. The Prius is capable of responding to a total of 4 remotes. If you attempt to program more than 4, it will erase the first remote programmed to make room for the next.

There are four different programming commands when setting up or verifying your remote transmitter, they are:
    A. Add mode, used to add a remote to your Prius that is not currently registered.
    B. Rewrite mode, used to erase all previously registered remotes and allow you to begin again the programming process.
    C. Confirmation mode, used to verify the number of remotes that are already programmed in your Prius.
    D. Prohibit mode, to prohibit all remotes from operating the door locks.

All four modes start with these instructions:
    1) Make sure that the key is not in the ignition, the doors are unlocked, and the driver's door is open.
    2) Very quickly, without turning, insert and remove key from the ignition twice. (leave key out)
    3) Close and open the driver door twice. (leave door in open position)
    4) Again, insert key into the ignition and remove it. This time only once. (leave key out)
    5) Close and open the driver door twice, then close the door.
    6) Insert key into the ignition and leave it in the LOCK position.

    A. Add mode:
A1) Turn the key to "ON" for 1 second, then turn back to "LOCK".
    A2) Remove the key.
A3) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK" and 1 second later "UNLOCK" (just listen)
A4) On your remote, press the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for 1 to 1½ seconds, then let go.
A5) On your remote, IMMEDIATELY press unlock by itself.
A6) You’ll get one of three responses:
R1) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK", then "UNLOCK" once. The remote is accepted. If you want to program another remote, immediately proceed to step A4 with your second remote, otherwise open the driver’s door and the remote is registered.
R2) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK", then "UNLOCK" twice. Either you didn’t use the same remote in steps A4 and A5(not likely), or this remote was already registered.
The timing was off when you pressed the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously and then UNLOCK by itself. Immediately press the two buttons together and the unlock by itself again. Keep trying until you get the locks to signal once that you have been successful. Then if you have another remote to program, quickly press its' buttons as before, until you hear the locks signal once. When you are finished, open and close the driver door to lock in the programming.
R3) If no response, go back to step 1 near the beginning of these instructions.

    B. Rewrite mode:
B1) Turn the key to "ON" for 1 second, turn back to "LOCK" for 1 second, then back to "ON" for 1 second, and finally back to "LOCK" for 1 second
    B2) Remove the key.
B3) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK", 1 second later "UNLOCK", 1 sec., "LOCK", 1 sec. "UNLOCK". (just listen)
B4) On your remote, press the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for 1 to 1½ seconds, then let go.
B5) On your remote, IMMEDIATELY press unlock by itself.
B6) You’ll get one of three responses:
R1) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK", then "UNLOCK" once. The remote is accepted. If you want to program another remote, immediately proceed to step B4, otherwise open the driver’s door and the remote is registered.
R2) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK", then "UNLOCK" twice. You didn’t use the same remote in steps B4 and B5(not likely).
R3) If no response, go back to step 1 near the beginning of these instructions.

    C. Confirmation mode:

C1) Turn the key in 1 to "ON" and back to "LOCK" in one second intervals for a total of 3 times.

    C2) Remove the key.

C3) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK" and "UNLOCK" in 2 second intervals. (just listen and count each set)
1 Set = You have 1 remote registered
2 Sets = You have 2 remotes registered
3 Sets = You have 3 remotes registered
4 Sets = You have 4 remotes registered
5 Sets = You do NOT have any remotes registered

    D. Prohibit mode:
D1) Turn the key to "ON" and back to "LOCK" in one second intervals a total of 5 times.
    D2) Remove the key.
D3) You’ll hear the doors "LOCK", 1 second later "UNLOCK" 5 times. (just listen and count each set)
D4) This will erase all previously registered remotes and cancel the wireless door lock function.

    Great info.

Is there anyway to permanently override the Nav lock-out while driving so you do not have to repeat the process for subsequent trips?

    Thanks,

    John

    No

If I am making a short stop and it is safe to do so I leave the car on in park with brake so as not to lose.

But it is really not that much of an inconvenience.

    Brent,

Excellent compilation! I think you should do a copy and paste and put that post in the Knowledge Base with the same subject line (i.e. "Known Hacks and Easter Eggs").

One note there are other choices on this menu. I would be very cautious about using any of them some people have had big problems with these, including but not limited to, having to disassemble, reset, and unplug the Nav ECU. Remember there is no manual for what you do on this screen. Feel free to experiment and let everyone know how it turns out. All experimental data should be documented.

I am uncertain if I can do that. Doesn't a mod have to post in the Knowledge Base?

Coastal Tech is selling a unit that'll do that (as well as auto-push the "I Agree" button), but that isn't out yet. There are some ways to hardwire a button that'll turn off the speed sensor for a minute or so.

I don't find it inconvenient as I only do this when needed (remember this can be done while the car is in motion, not just when you power up). Normally I enter the destination at the beginning of my trip. Since July, I've needed to do this twice.

Actually, no....anyone can post there. However, I already copied and pasted your fine compilation and posted it in the KB. You, of course, got credit! :) :)

I don't understand the "Programming New Keys" item. What does it mean "turn the key from "LOCK" to "ON"". Is this for the ignition FOB? That one does not turn, it only pushes in and out. (At least I think it does, I just use my SKS all the time!).

So with this procedure I can take my wife's 2005 Prius FOB and re-program it to open my 2004 Prius? Thats not the same as making all 4 FOBS open either Prius, is it?

The key programming is only valid for the classic. You need the scan tool for the HSD, and even then, it is confusing, especially with SKS.

But yes, you should be able to have your dealer cross-register your fobs. Please note though, the mechanical key backup won't match. This will be a problem getting into the car if the fob or car battery should die. You might want to have one of those credit card keys made for both cars for both of you.

I just bought a 2006 Prius and I can't get the Nav override to work. Does anyone know for sure that it still works on the 2006 model? If not, is there a new way to get to the service menu on the 2006? Dose the hardware mod they sell for it work on the 2006 model still if I can't get the software override to work?

    Thanks,

It apparently does not work on the 06. The Easter Egg on the 04-05 is not documented in the service manual it was leaked (or discovered by someone) to a Lexis site and passed on. It is not known if there is a new back door for the Nav System or not. The sequence of touches on the screen are similar to the entry point for the Diagnostic Screens for the rest of the system and it is possible that someone just kept trying the same sequence of upper left lower left touches to different screens until it was found. You could try the same formula. The 06 has diagnostic screens that are accessed in the same fashion. Who knows?
