Well now I know I've spent way too much time on Prius Chat. That's a landmark post. That has to be the- understandably- least enthusiastic monthy inventory post that I have ever seen.

From your perspective do you have any feel for how the production/availabilty vs. Demand trend is likely to head? Or do you think next months allotment will make this months look like an embarrasement of riches?

I wish I did not know the answer to that.

As you may see, my focus has had to be elsewhere.
Production is low for obvious reasons. Power (electricity) demands in Japan. Parts problems. Availability of things as simple as paint ... the computer chips and electronic parts etc = huge problems. It is not getting better any time soon, that I can tell you. They have already admitted to the world - as they have the responsibility to do for their stockholders - that it's not going to be till fall that we have a more regular build going on all cars.

I am focusing on the positive, selling what we have and CAN get, and taking orders and gathering info on PHEV and the new v WAGON coming...

That said, if you are spending a fortune on fuel right now, even with the higher cost for the Prius, the car is STILL worth it. What else gets that sort of fuel economy, has free maintenance for 2 years/25K miles, keeps its value like these do, and will help mother earth to boot? Even at a few bucks extra a month vs what they were months back, it's probably STILL a better deal than sticking it in the gas tank at ARCO or Shell.

The deal is the car itself. Sometimes the terms are better, sometimes worse. But, the deal is the car. Period. I have always believed that. And, I will continue to as my own 2007 hits the 145K mark shortly. :)

Surprised to see that you even have one Prius V Adv Tech at all... curious if that's going for discount, MSRP or premium?

And you're right about the car being the deal... we ended up trading in our Audi Q7 and my wife is loving her sub-$40 fill ups with 480-500 mile range.

    Hi Diane,

We just went to a Toyota Dealer in NJ today and inquired about a Prius 2 and the dealer was not willing to budge below $25,000. The MSRP is $24,010 here but he insisted that the car has some coating on it called nano bond and handed me a blank certificate of authenticity. He proceeded to explain that the car was also supposed to receive a $600 detailing (some plastic fender thing on the side and stickers I guess) and a lojack for another $1000 and would not budge from that. Does the nano bond come stock on cars or is this always something they put on afterwards? It was not on the description on the window of the car.

They tried pushing us to sign and tried explaining that after all of this we would still owe $27,000 on the car with a $2000 down payment. I found this ridiculous.

    What are your thoughts?

I know you're not asking me, but I think Diane would agree with me when I say: Forget about the MSRP. Think about buying the Prius in the same way you would buy a house. If you want it, then pay what you need to pay. If you decide it's not worth the money to you, then you have lots of other options to choose from.

Like a house, a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If you're not willing to pay the asking price, then chances are that someone else is. When it comes to the Prius, it's a seller's market right now. Deal with it! ;)

Exactly. MSRP is just that, a suggested price.

If the car has "safety Connect" it does not need LoJack - totally redundant. Besides LoJack costs much less than $1000. Your dealer is ripping you off because he can. I would look for another dealer, or even see what you can get online. It might even be cheaper to buy from an out of state dealer like Diane and have the car shipped. That is what I did when Huntington Toyota started screwing around with an extra $750 "documentation fee" on top of the MSRP. Got it below MSRP from Expressway Toyota near Boston, and had it shipped. Even with the shipping it came in at several hundred dollars below sticker. And, they were a pleasure to deal with, setting up the cars cutomizable options exactly as I had specified without any extra fees.

First off, a II has no safety connect.
I think at this point, LoJack isn't a bad idea for as Prius. They are a hard car to replace and will be for some time. It isn't 1000 - that is correct, but dealerships cannot sell everything at cost.
And, I am not selling out of state right now. I don;t hardly have enough stock for my clients IN state. And, selling out of state affects my allocations in a negative way annually. When I have cars flying out my a$$, and I don't care about the future allocations, I will start selling regular Prius out of state. Till then, no out of state deals. Not unless it makes financial sense to do so.

Seems to me like the prices won't come don that much even after production begins again. Usually good pricing happens end of year as they have left over models and need to make way for the next year. If they don't produce nearly that many 2011 models- then they won't be left over to make way for 2012.
