Would it not be more expeditious to do it this way?

    1. remove reartire and replace with spare.
    2. remove flat front and replace with rear.

2 Steps instead of 4; unless of course you like staying under the rain. ;)

Had my first flat on the '10 a few days ago in the middle of Ohio on I-90. Toyo Proxes. Right rear, so at least I didn't have to jocky the front/back swap, nor would I have known to do that if it was the front that was cut. Thanks to this thread, I now know about not using the donut except on the rear.

Had to take a hotel for a couple nights while the dealer (Rouen, in Maumee) ordered the tire. I contemplated them mounting an el-cheapo $100 tire to get me home a day faster, but in the end, I wouldn't be time or money ahaead since another trip to get the right tire would still have been needed.

As luck would have it, the leak allowed me to get to a rest stop 20 miles later. The tire still had 18psi in it but went completely flat minutes later. The donut had 40 psi in it. Don't think the selling dealer ever checked the pressure weeks earlier when prepping. Everyone - check the pressure in that thing.

The donut didn't mount too well. and the lug nuts barely fit. But it did allow me to get a hotel abd another 30 miles to the closest dealer the next day.

I had a lot of time to think how much easier it would be if all cars came with a real spare.

1 Proxes tire at dealer - $245. I called to my selling dealer and they would have charged $285. On line (which was impossible in my situation, much much less).

IF the donut spare tire and the original tire have the same diameter (they usually don't) then there is no harm in putting the spare on the front.

I burnt out the rear end (positive traction clutches) on a different vehicle in Germany by putting the space saving tire on the rear end. It's bad JuJu believe me.

You have run flats? Wow that's cool I guess. What make model and size do you have? How is your FE and MPG's?

Am I the only one to carry patch kit/compressor?
most of the time it is easier to patch tire then take it off. I had bent lug wrench once trying to take tire off, that was right after getting new tires :)

Remember, folks, that the transmission PARK position only locks up the front wheels. The parking brake lock up the rear wheels. Chocks help take up some of the slack.

Trying to change a tire without setting the vehicle in PARK and setting the parking brake is asking for trouble.
Chocking the opposite wheels is also a VERY GOOD IDEA!

I do not know about others, but I do not feature having the vehicle slip off the jack when I am changing a tire.

The manual provides similar guidelines for changing a flat. You might want to check it out sometime.

My driveway is on a strong angle so I always use the Pbrake, I don't like this in the winter but I feel safer

I use one primarily to reduce vehicle weight.

Habitually doing something wrong doesn't make it right. Tomorrow may be the day your, inadequately restrained, car rolls down the hill into my properly parked Prius. For your safety and mine, please reconsider your parking brake practice.

Been using the parking brake 100% of the time for 50 years. Never been an issue.

carry a couple tire wedges (chocks) in your trunk and always always always find a level area to jack up the car. then, you won't have any problems with the jack. and use the emergency brake, as mentioned above.

Pearl has -always- had the parking brake applied when parking. Except once, when I purposely left her in "N" and "ready" to push her around. ;)

Please note my location. The parking brake has -never- "frozen" on (or off). Now Bruiser (FJ Cruiser) did freeze when I bought him. That was because the dealer guys got a little enthusiastic about cleaning him up after I purchased him. The pressure washer filled the p-brake with water. It went "bang" when I forced him to move. :)

Just because the car is automatic and smarter than most drivers is no reason to operate it improperly!
