Yep, we picked up a new Large Big Green Egg this evening and after paying for it wondered if it would fit in the Prius! Sure enough, it had to be laid on it's side but it fit, but it and all it's accessories fit. I think we were pushing the envelope as far as max capacity with the Large Egg (140 lbs) and my wife and I in the car. For those in the North Atlanta area who know what a Big Green Egg is and are in the market for one, Ace Hardware on E. Paulding Drive, Dallas, GA, has them on sale. We got our Large for $599.00, a $200 savings! The sale runs though the 15th of May!
This is actually our third (Egg, not Prius). We've had a Medium for about three years and have wanted a Large ever since we got the Medium! We also keep a Mini in our camper. We love them!
I see you installed Clazzio leather seat covers. How hard were they to install? I really like the look.
Not bad at all, took about 3 hours taking my time. I installed them in the winter, it may be easier in warmer weather because the material may be more pliable when warm...
a well-respected grill/smoker. if my weber ever dies and i have an excess of $ i'll own one, but the weber meets 95% of my needs Let me google that for you obligatory prius content; everybody's 1-10 rating on the leather seat covers?
Agree with the great choice on getting a BGE and a Prius. I had no doubt about it fitting. I'm a dual Egg and dual Hybrid owner and am extremely proud of both. Lots of BGE photos: Collection: Big Green Egg
Yep, the BGE is the ultimate Grilling, smoking, slow cooking, baking machine! When we first got here in early 2008 we bought a gas grill, then my wife got me a Medium BGE for Father's Day, the gas grill has sat unused ever since! The following summer we had the opportunity to snag a Mini BGE that we use when camping, it's the envy of every camping trip, and I normally end up doing most of the grilling! We have been wanting a Large BGE since regretting not getting it to begin with, but having two side by side is even better! So, being as we have 3 BGE's and 3 Hybrids, I guess we qualify as obsessive eco eggheads! We did a Boston Butt low 'n slow on the Medium for Mother's day, it was absolutely awesome! efusco: Love the smoked cheese setup! Signs you're also a true Egghead!
Thanks Paul, yea, I'm a serious believer in the BGE. I can grill a steak at 700F to beat any of the high end places, I can smoke a brick of cheese, I can cook frozen pizza on it, I can put a brisket on there for 24 hours to smoke and not have the temperature fluctuate 10 degrees the entire time....and then it'll melt in your mouth like butter with a smoke so rich and amazing you wanna cry. I'm an Egghead indeed.
When I bought my 1st "BIG GREEN EGG"...they were known by a different name, which I cannot recall for the life of me. It was 1969 and we (wife and I) were living in Sasebo, Japan. We found this charcoal burning "oven" either on the local economy or the Navy Exchange. When we got transferred in June 1970 from Sasebo (on the southern island of Kyushu) to Yokosuka (on the Island of Honshu) we cleaned out our "egg" and loaded it into the cavernous truck of our 1967 Plymouth Barracuda and drove to our new Yokosuka home. Our "egg" was the find of a lifetime, and we wore ours out during our 4 year tour in Yokosuka. Sadly, we haven't seen another since then. I hope you are enjoying yours as much as we used to enjoy ours. We are no longer in the market for one as we have a gas grill installed next to our pool now, and we use it year long here in Virginia.
retired navy, you should reconsider. That gas grill will start rusting out, wearing out and adds an odd taste to food. You can't smoke on it, you can't get it hot enough to properly sear a steak. I've had my first BGE for over 10 years now and have done nothing more than replace a gasket. Food tastes better, it lights almost as fast as a gas grill, holds temperature better and is just far more satisfying to use. While the purchase price is more more than most gas grills, you'll save money in the long haul b/c you'll probably never have to replace it.
Thanks for posting this. Was the Large big green egg assembled or in a box? Did you put it in the back seat or trunk? I'd like to gee the XL which is 24 inch, do you think it would fit? (trunk or back seat) The Large Specs are: 18.25 Inch Cooking Grid Grill Dimensions 30 H x 21 W x 21 D The XL Spec are: 24 Inch Cooking Grid Grill Dimensions 27.25 H x 26.5 W x 26.5 D So the height is actually 2.5 inches less but the width is 5.5 inches more. I'm looking to buy a Prius and XL BGE so your wisdom matters. I do competition BBQ events and like and would love for it to fit. Thanks in advance to everyone who can help me out.
