Changing to Synthetic Oil, are these okay to use???

Two things: Oil and Filter
While the Oil may last 10k miles, the filter has a limited capacity to hold dirt and stuff.


Purolator PureONE oil filters should be replaced every 3,000 miles or 3 months depending on the driving conditions - or unless otherwise specified by the vehicle's manufacturer.


In this case, the recommended change interval is 5k miles for the filter... You can however, see if they'll last longer then that, but only at your own risk...

 

The last few oil changes I've been going about 8500 miles on just synthetic blend (Valvoline Durablend 5W30) and the OEM filter. At the end of those 8500 miles it runs every bit as smooth and as powerful and with the same good MPG's as the day the oil was new. Also, when I drain the oil it still looks in good condition. I don't do a of of short trips though, so I'm sure my oil has a pretty easy life.

 

I use the same and go 10K also but use the original filter. Its approx $4. Its very cheap insurance. I know that filter has the correct bypass valve.

I change the filter only every 5,000 miles and while I'm under there I lube the chassis.

 

In the UK the filters are used for 10K miles regardless of maker but Toyota own is probably best. For some time now (years) oil and filter change interval has been 10K miles or 1year witch ever is sooner.

 

Mobile makes a long life filter to go with their extended drain interval synthetics. I just put one on at the last oil change. Called "Mobile 1 Extended Performance M1-103".

I do filter every 5k, oil change 15k. 5 prii all running dandy. Mobil 1, wix filter (upgraded fram, wix the same price in quantity). I watch for 5qt on sale and scoop up.

 

On both my cars I go to 10K and that's being conservative. I've done the used oil analysis (UOA) several times to verify that the oil is still in good shape at that point. UOA on my Odyssey showed that Amsoil was better at 10K than the Honda oil was at 5K. Blackstone said the oil could go even further but I'm not pushing it.
This is my first time trying Mobil 1 though, so I may take a sample at 5K and send it in. Or I may not, everything I've read indicates that Mobile 1 is good up to 10K as well. Especially in the Prius where the ICE doesn't even run for a good portion of those miles, or idle when stopped, etc.

With my FJ Cruiser I have to grease the zerks. But the entire time I owned my '04 Prius I never found a single zerk

 

Zerks? Some cars still have zerks?

The last zerks I knew about were in my '84 Ford. And I thought they were put in by my parent's rural dealership, not by the factory, so they could be greased just like the tractors.

i am also using purolator PL20195 oversized filter. going 10k miles before change.
i have 2 high performance german cars bmw benz, both typically go 12-14k miles before the computer tripmeter calls for an oil change. the filters are no larger than in our cars. with synthetic oils they are never badly clogged. just pulled valve cover on the benz at 110k miles, following computer ordered change interval approx every 12k miles, no buildup whatsoever.
on our dinky prius engine, 4 quarts snthetic 5w30 and an oversized filter, on an engine that only runs 1/2 the time the car is running??? its no brainer. it wont be a problem at all.
if it helps you sleep at night euro prius cars have recommended oil change interval of 10k miles
i do check the oil level every 3k just to make sure, benz and bimmer are nice because they do it for you

pl20195 was on amazon special pricing, lucky for me the filter fits the 4runner also.
funny thing is stock filter on the V8 4runner is almost as small as the prius filter. rediculous. i use the purolator on the 4runner also. toyota filters not worth the price, better filters can be bought for the same or less money.

 

I too, highly recommend the PL20195. Saw it open after your 10k change. It's really a nicely built filter compared to the junk Frams and such!

 

The FJ Cruiser isn't a car, it's an off-road vehicle. Most don't have u-joint zerks, most Toyota trucks do

But I haven't found a zerk on a Toyota car in perhaps two decades

 

I have my first Prius. Previously owned, it's a 2008 w/ 63,000 miles. I live on Kauai, and plan to switch to synth on this upcoming oil change. For decades, my conservative nature has caused me to change my dino oil in all my vehicles very 3,000 miles. From what I read here, could I put Amsoil synth in my Prius, use the Mobile 1 Extended Performance M1-103 filter, and go for 10,000 miles?

Or am I being too aggressive?

Mobil-1 is all I use and also the Mobil-1 M1-103 Filter. Walmart normally has these both in stock, or it has in the past anyway. Now that you mention it, I am overdue. Job for tomorrow. The Extended Performance Oil says 15k miles except for harsh use. The M1-103 high capaciy filter says 2x capacity. I usually try to change both before 10K miles. I am off warranty, but you should always follow warranty in any case.

 

I changed to Mobil-1 early at 4000 miles. My guess is first synthetic re-fill at 63000 better to change it at 5000 miles, on the assumption you may do some initial degunking, and also you will still have some conventional oil hold-up in there. Then ramp it up to 10K next refill. The websites all have FAQ guidance (eg. www.mobiloil.com) so you can see what they say.
