Hello, I am just wondering how low can i push the gas gauge before running out of gas? Also, manual says 92 or higher gas requires ? Thanks, C
When you get down to one bar and it starts blinking, if you switch over to the miles until empty display, it will read about 20 miles at that point. When that gets down to 0 miles, you should have 1.5 to 2 gallons left. You probably shouldn't go much lower than that. Where do you get the 92 octane? My US Gen III manual says 87 octane.
Greetings! Once the last 'pip' starts flashing, you have between 1.8 and 1.9 gallons remaining. How far you push that is a function of MPG, terrain, testicular fortitude, and intelligence. Your call. I can't remember the goofy formula for octane ratings, but use 87. I promise you that you don't need to use a higher octane blend than that unless you drive in altitudes which require pilots to go on oxygen. If you get some free time, Google will explain the octane rating formulae better than I (can't) remember it. Good Luck!

My 2010 manual say 87 and 91 octane, but that's not a big enough difference to be concerned about. The 87 or 88 is for the US octane rating which is an average of the MON and RON numbers. The 91 or 92 number that is based on RON only isn't normally used at the consumer level in the US, so you can ignore it. If you see 87 octane on a pump in the US, it's good for a Prius.
US pumps use (Ron+Mon)/2 avg for rating, and the difference btw RON and MON ~8-10, so 87 equals 92. On top the 87 E10 actual octane rating is higher then indicated, 93/94 Research number.
ok. thanks. with my previous cars Wrx and m45, i used only shell 94 in mass. i am a gas natzi, but 87 it is. the shell only. the best around. c
i used to use shell, but awhile ago i needed gas bad and mobil was on the horizon. funny thing, i got about 5 mpg more on that tank so i have used it ever since.
Some crazy luck , you know it, i know it, every body know. shell is the best. aks any high end car tuner. the most consistent gas on the marker. sunoco is second in line to it.
Not sure how it works in the States, but in Canada, you use the cheap stuff. That's what the vast majority of cars need, but for some reason they have a lot of higher octane pumps. I agree with the above posters regarding gas reserves when the last pip starts blinking. I think basically when that happens you want to focus on tanking up, never mind how much is left. Personally I fill up whenever it's convenient usually on the weekend, anytime we're near our usual station anyway, and the gas is below 1/2 full.
That is a misprint, in the manuals of the very first MY2010 cars to reach the market. Later manuals were corrected to 87 Octane, and notice of that change was posted somewhere here on PriusChat during the summer of 2009.
