Hi - what is a reasonable price discount to MSRP this month? Are people really paying MSRP? I'm trying to get a Prius IV and while I understand there is a shortage in what's coming from Japan, there is no shortage of dealers calling me with offers for MSRP - so I suspect that the cars are not exactly flying off the shelves at those prices. Any thoughts or experience on this in the community? Would love to hear about the deals people are getting. Thanks!!!
According to the USAA Car Buying Service, there are no discounts or incentives being offered in the Atlanta market this month on any base trim levels, MSRP on a base IV, per their car buying service is $27,651.00. Are you looking at any options? It seems that is you add Nav, or other options those are priced at Invoice, but the base vehicle is at MSRP. So, if MSRP on Nav is say $2000 and Invoice on Nav is $1800, the price of the IV w/Nav would be MSRP for the vehicle plus Invoice Price on the Nav or any other options it may have listed on the sticker. So, a fully optioned vehicle will have some discount, where as the Base Model will not. Hope this makes sense... When I purchased, the best price available was through USAA, so I'm betting most dealerships in this area are tacking on fees above MSRP, so at this time purchasing at MSRP may be the best deal. If it were me, I'd wait 6 month to a year before buying, other manufactures are going to be releasing Hybrids and EVs this fall, and production in Japan should resume by then. Both these factors will drive the price of a Prius back to reasonable levels! However, if they are calling, and the vehicles aren't moving, you can always try and negotiate a lower price! I got the best deals (under USAA Pricing) by purchasing on the last day of the month! If sales were low that month, you stand a better chance of getting a lower price if there's pressure on the dealership to meet sales goals! If they still aren't will to negotiate, then I'd wait! Unless you absolutely must have a new car now, it could save you thousands to put off your purchase for a few months...
Thanks Paul - really helpful. I noticed you have a blizzard Pearl - did you have to deal with a markup for that color in particular - Am being told so.."special white lexus paint"...
The AAA price for a Four is $27212 (invoice + $1000). Toyota has always charged extra for Blizzard Pearl. Good luck finding a car. Around here Holman has 1 used 2010 & Liberty has 1 new 2011.
Caveat: The USAA Pricing I provide was for Atlanta, you did not specify your exact location, so price may vary depending on your local. USAA uses the same pricing engine as TrueCar.com. Having said that, I did not pay extra for the Blizzard Pearl paint. When you price the car through USAA the price does not change if you choose a different color. Again, this is based on pricing within my zip code. Also, my dealership did not quibble over the extra $220 for Pearl paint, they honored the USAA price for the vehicle I chose on their lot. This is just my experience during my buying process, and that was last July when supplies were more plentiful and gas was a little more reasonable... With the disaster in Japan and out of control gas hikes, all this has probably changed, so obviously your experience my vary. I'm merely sharing my experiences in the hopes it will help in your negotiations, it's not intended to be Gospel in every situation! Good luck in your search!
My wife and I paid retail for ours as well. The dealership we bought from sold 4 units that week and up front told us that there was no nnegotiation room on the sticker price. Still worth it IMO. For us the $200+/month fuel savings was more of a deciding factor.
We also used USAA pricing service. Their quote was a few $$ above MSRP. We paid MSRP without trying to negotiate. I noticed our dealership has 11 Prii coming in soon (mostly II and III). instead of giving the price on the internet now, they say to call on price. I wonder if that means they'll be trying to get over MSRP. Given the price and mpg ratings of the other vehicles we considered, we consider it a good deal. We keep our vehicles a long time, and this is the first time we ever bought one new. Good luck.
The AAA price across the entire Prius line is over MSRP here & good luck finding a car on the lot. Holman Toyota has 1. Liberty Toyota has 2 Twos.
