Tire wear - how many miles are people getting on their stock tires?

I just past 30,000 on my stock 15" Yokohama Avid's. Rotation is every 10,000. Wear is even and they look to have at least another 10,000 left. I don't wear them down too close before replacing. PSI = 42/41.

 

I am wondering about the same thing...

I have 55,000 miles on original tires. Rotated every 5000 miles (more or less). I am wondering if I should get new ones...

 

Check the tire tread in relation to the wear bars. If the tread is flush with the wear bars, time for new tires.

 

I have the Yokohama Avid's, 15" standard, with 25,000 miles. Tires rotated every 5,000 miles and tire pressure checked regularly.

My tires are wearing evenly with 40/38 and it looks like I will be lucky to get 35,000 out of these.

A Yokohama Avid S33D tire has a Treadwear rating of 320. I use a 100 multiplier for comparison purposes. So this would put this tire at 32,000 miles. Looks like it is going to be pretty close.

 

Tire tread is subjective and varies from place to place. Take a look at the number's I've gotten;

15k miles
Toyota service says my tread is 5/32"

20k miles
Firestone says I'm at 7/32"

25k miles
Toyota service - 6/32"

30k miles
Toyota service - 8/32"
Firestone - 8/32"

So as you can see tire tread grows over time.

My point is, I would not trust one service tech's measurement. Measure it yourself with a penny. You should literally be able to see the baldness. You should be getting at least 50,000 miles out of your tires.

 

Here are the tread wear ratings for the 15" OE Tires

Yokohama Avid S33 - 320 (829 Revs per mile)
Bridgestone Ecopia EP20 - 380 (833 Revs per mile)
Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max - 540 (836 Revs per mile)

It seems diameter (revs) are correlated to tread wear rating, which makes sense. But I don't believe they are strictly related.

I have the Yokohamas. Seems like the Goodyear tires should last a while, but perhaps the OE version are not rated the same.

 

35,000 miles for me... though with the extreme snowfalls here, sooner would have been better... especially since I found such nice replacements (Goodyear Assurance Fuel-Max). If it was summer, I likely would have went longer. Winter came at bad time.

Toyota really skimps on the tires. The 2007 Corolla I just traded in on my Prius got less than 35,000 miles. Goodyears. They still had plenty of tread, but I had to get new ones when the SECOND sidewall gave out within a week. I don't expect more from the Prius tires.

Those small differences in diameter would have no measurable effect of tread wear.

Different tread wear ratings usually usually mean something within a given manufacturers line of tires but not so much between tires from different manufacturers.

 

I have the Bridgestone Ecopia EP20 and have 38,000 on them, and plan at least 20,000 more.

 

My car came with Toyo Proxis A20 (215/45-17 size). They have 39K miles, tread depth 4/32. I rotated and crossed them over once to make sure they all 4 wore out at about the same time. All 4 are worn fairly evenly but have just a bit more tread in the center than on the outsides due to wear when cornering. I have used 45 to 48 psi (51 psi max load tires).

They have been good tires but I won't use them again because of the rip off price. I will replace them with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S from Costco or Tire Rack.

Break down and get a proper tread depth gauge, LOL.

I'd set 4/32" as bare minimum, especially if you're headed into winter, and not swapping to snow tires. Would not run them down to wear bars, which I believe are at 2/32".

Also, if the tires are nearing 5 years since date of manufacture, time for new ones, regardless of tread depth.

 

reporting in with 45062 miles on the stock 15" avid tires. they've seen 20 states and all kinds of conditions, tread is just about done, though the deeper groove/ channels have about an 1/8th inch to go before complete baldness.

getting avid envigors put on my ssr 16" wheels today, overall a few pounds lighter per wheel/tire combo over stock!

 

Got 49K out of front 15" OEM Avids, rears are still on. ~38K they were almost to the bars, but then it took long time to actually get to the bars completely.

No rotation, we usually put new on front and move old front to rear on FWD.

 

Bridgestone Turanza EL400-02 17" tires. 25k miles now (rotated every 10k miles), 8/32 front and 7/32 rear (factory recommended 35 psi front/33 psi rear).

 

Stock integrities, 185/65/15, factory recommended PSI. 42,000 Miles. Upgraded to Goodyear Fuel Max 195/65/15 42PSI (F) 40PSI (R). MPG improved.
