So it's either econobox or luxury car, there's nothing between those two categories? :nono:
Me nor thai nor other people here that think that Prius is not an econobox :fencing: never have written that Prius is Luxury car, we just don't agree that it's an econobox!:mod:

Econobox? The Prius is an "out of the box" car, as in thinking.

Hyundai has the stuff figured out. Damn nice vehicles inside & out. If that Elantra were a hybrid, it'd be in my sights come next June.

OK, I will say it, the Prius V (Five) is a luxury vehicle with all the options added on :peace:

You guys are funny in this thread :p

I'd say that the Prius can be had as a bare bones econo-egg all the way up to juicy Luxury appointed, with all kinds of fancy options. It really has a wide range of appeal, but we all know that already or we wouldn't be on this cool forum hashing out opinions. Everyone has their own tastes & ideas, nobody else can change that easily, or if at all. There is nothing wrong with wanting to own a base stripped down vehicle or wanting to have all that is available in options, or darn close to that. To each his/her own desires. We are all very very different, but, we all likely share one common passion or we would not be on this forum, that passion is called the Prius, in whatever form each of us desires it to be in :thumb:

It's neither an econobox or (nor?) a luxury vehicle. It's somewhere in between...regardless of trim level. Obviously, there are varying levels of creature comforts as one progresses through the models (II, III, IV, V)...but to say that a loaded V is a luxury car (akin to say...an Infiniti G37, or a BMW, Mercedes, etc.), is just plain silly.

That said, I really don't think any trim level Prius can be compared to something like a stipped down, bare bones Chevy Aveo...THAT is an econobox.

All this was probably already said in the previous 17 pages of fodder...but my middle-aged eyes aren't prepared to read through that much data online.

    Define:
An econobox is a US slang term for any of a series of small, boxy, fuel-efficient car with few luxuries and a low sticker price.

When I think of Econobox, I think Toyota Yaris, Geo metro,Chevy Aveo
Maybe no radio, crank up windows, No air conditioner,on...on..
You know something around $13 grand I don't think the Prius fits that description!

Maybe a more correct term would be a Eco-car ;)

Whatever the masses call it, I think the Prius is damn nice looking & awesome to drive.

    You're absolutely right.
Revhigh and Macmaster05 tried to offend V w/ATP owners that they paid unreasonable price for their car because they think about their car as of an econobox.
I don't want to take them their opinion but I have my own. If I want higher trim options and I'm able and willing to pay the price it's my decision based on my opinion.

Wow 18 pages of debate over whether The Prius is an Econo-Box?

    Clearly IMO no.

Not by my personal definition of what I would consider an Econo-Box. I don't think any vehicle with the mechanical sophistication and complication of HSD coupled with high tech available features like Solar Moon Roof, Radar Cruise Control and Self Parking, would ever fall into the Econo-Box definition for me.

To me an econo box, is an entry level, bare bones offering, usually compact with little or no extra's or ammenities. Doesn't sound like a Prius to me.

FWIW... this is from edmunds.com review of the 2010 Prius.

    "...
The latest Prius might even seem like a small, ultra-efficient luxury sedan depending on how you equip it. Luxury-themed items like heated leather seats, a solar-powered sunroof (cools the interior when parked), a navigation system, radar-based adaptive cruise control (matches your speed to the car ahead), a pre-collision system (retracts seatbelts and applies the brakes if a crash is unavoidable) and a lane-departure warning system for inattentive drivers are all available. Also, the automated self-parking system you've seen in Lexus commercials makes its way onto the Prius' options sheet.

The Prius has been a huge success, and with such success comes added competition. The all-new Honda Insight looks similar to the Prius, has similar fuel efficiency and costs less, but it's smaller and less sophisticated. The Ford Fusion Hybrid's more traditional body style and more involving driving dynamics should appeal to those who want their hybrid to be a little more like a normal car. The Camry Hybrid is another possibility, as is the limited-availability Altima Hybrid. Regardless, when it comes to an ultra-practical, ultra-efficient automotive choice that, depending on equipment, can be anything from an economy car to a luxury car, the 2010 Toyota Prius cannot be beat.
