Toyota Prius 2010 Insurance

Safeco? My rates went down a lot when I switched from State Farm to Safeco. I haven't shopped around recently for car insurance but when I tried Insurance Quotes Online: Auto, Home, Health, Term Life, Renters long ago, every quote that came back was higher than my Safeco rate.

Los Angeles is part of your big problem. I have much higher coverage than you do but pay less than $792 (in total) every 6 months to insure BOTH my cars. Being in WA state helps. (I had a former roommate from UCLA when we both went there and he saved a TON of $ by switching his Los Angeles insurance to WA for the 3 months we were interning in WA.)

 

I live in NC and we have 2 cars, one being a 2011 Prius III. We have State Farm and our annual premium is $900 with a $1000 deductible. As many other have said, many factors influence your premium. We happen to have all of our insurane with State Farm

 

The premium we pay with State Farm for our 2011 $24,000 Prius II is only $2 less per month than what we pay for my 2010 $45,000 Dodge Challenger SRT. Twice the price and 4 times the power costs just $2 more per month!. The agent cited the Prius's lower safety rating as the reason. It's all a load of baloney.

 

I have not read all the posts, so I appologize if I am repeating someone else.
I pay (just renewed today) $550 for 6 months with State Farm. I drive about 30,000 miles per year. I have 100k/300k/1MM with a $500 deductible for collision and $250 for comprehensive. I live in Southern California. I have been told by my agent that hybrids are less to insure, in general. I also have my home with them, which makes a difference.

 

My State Farm auto rates went down when I got my Prius. I think rates here in NC may be some of the lowest in the nation. Factors that influence car insurance rates besides location are insurance company, vehicle usage, number of drivers, age, driving history, deductibles, limits of coverage, credit, gender and more.

 

I am paying $911/6mo with Geico for 2011 Prius, with $1000 deductible for collision/comprehensive - that's the lowest rate I've got so far, the next more expensive one from different company was for $1200/6mo. I was paying $430/6mo (just liability) with Geico for my Ford Explorer '02 prior to Prius.

 

2011 Prius V w/ tech. $355 every 6 months.

100k/300k/100k. Rental assistance. $250 comprehensive and $1000 collision.

State Farm since 1979. No claims or tickets. Two cars, home, and life.

 

I pay 342 a MONTH (yes, a month). It's because I've only had my license for 2 1/2 years, even though my record is perfect. And because I reported that I will be driving 15,000 miles a year.

 

In GA the rate went up from our explorer, we were told that hybrids get into more accidents...seems to me that others force them into more accidents but no point in arguing.

We pay $158 a month for 2 new cars and some extra life insurance for me.

 

We're about $500 every 6 months now for Prius and another car via Geico, with pretty high coverage and low deductibles. Area obviously impacts this a great deal.

 

Check with an Independant Insurance Agent. Have them use their PL comparitive rater. Higher deductibles work suggest $500 on both comp and Collision with full glass. You need 1st party coverage 1st. So bump up the no fault, medical payments, & un/under coverage. Carry at least $100,000 of BI/PD lawsuit/liability cover. Our car gets mutiple safety discounts. Make sure you are getting all of those:
air bags, passive restraints, anti lock brakes, theft immoblizer system, Hybrid veh. multi car if you have another. Now what is your commute and driving record that is causing such a high rate? Clients can't get coverage flying into Libya today. Are you driving into Mexico or Watts?

Def important to check your not being gouged on medical coverage costs and deductibles they might be giving you the lowest deductible and highest coverage for medical costs, which are great to have but could sprial your monthly costs out of control. My wife and I are 28 and we pay $52 a month for our 2010, which I still think is a tad high. Thats with Indiana Farm Bureau, multi-car multi-line discounts, no self inflicted accidents, and no tickets ever.

 

I need some help here:

I'm getting charged a ludicrous amount for insurance, and when I called Progressive to see what the increase would be for a 2011 prius it was jaw-dropping.

The problem seems to be that I have 1 at-fault accident, but even without it prices seem high.

details: 100/300k coll and comp. some medical, 250/500 deductible.

The accident was labeled as at-fault. $0 to my car, $650 to other car and $2600 medical paid.

I got quoted $1851.90 from Progressive FOR 6-MONTHS! I couldn't believe it! Geico online quote was $1436, again for 6 months.
I'm 27, male, no tickets, etc. I'm living in Berkeley CA at the moment.

Is this crazy or does an accident really mess you up this much? It won't 'fall off' 2013...

Paying $1000/year from State Farm with $1MM coverage under business.

 

Progressive was raping me for $947 every 6 months. Granted, I didn't carry the full insurance on my previous car, just MN state minimums, but still. They also "claimed" I was in their low-risk group as a low-risk driver w/no tickets/accidents, low-mileage, non-inner-city address, etc.

Yesterday I switched to 21st Century & saved $1023/year, as the premiums are so low I can make quarterly payments w/no finance fees for monthly payments. I now pay $492 with 100/300K coll/comp, increased medical, full glass, 500 deductibles, etc. My local agent was amazed... closest she could come using among all the companies she uses was $642. She also thought what Progressive was charging to be simply outrageous.

The only worrisome thing to me is that I do not have a local agent for 21st Century, so if I ever have to file a claim I won't have a local advocate working on my behalf. I'll be talking on the phone to a stranger in a phone bank. But for a thousand bucks in savings, that's a risk I'm willing to assume.

 

Did you use a website to get multiple quotes, or an independent agent?

 

I used both. In my case, 21st Century was the winner by hundreds of dollars. I followed up on my internet quote by pushing the "call me back" button on the 21st website and they dialed me within seconds and connected me an agent almost immediately... just like the Amazon.com website. In talking to the 21st Century agent, I realized additional savings by applying more discounts such as those mentioned by nickfromny in post#71 above.

I also discovered (and I swear I did not know this!) that it's okay to cancel a policy mid-way through. You are not obigated to pay stupid rates for 6 months if something better is available. Progressive is sending me a refund for about a 3rd of last month's $150 payment.
