2005 w/ 220k miles in good condition (sight yet unseen), no maint records, but current owner says in good shape (obviously this needs to be confirmed). No accidents or anything, what would you pay for this? Also, what is the worst-case repair charge? Dead inverter? And that's about $4500-5000 at dealership, but with salvage can be a ton cheaper...? I have the VIN on this thing but can't believe carfax, autocheck want $30 these days just to check one
Use kbb.com as a place to start negotiations from. I came up with ~$7,300 when I ran it on kbb, but then again I did not know the options or condition. You'd know if the inverter was dead when you went to buy it. As with any used car, you could end up with some unexpected large 2-3 thousand dollar item. But a 2005 Prius is pretty reliable overall.
What about other potential issues? I think a battery can be replaced with a salvaged one for fairly cheap, right ($1-2k)? The price of this car is extremely low but its miles are high so I'm seeing the difference between it and a 2005 with, say, 100k as money I could put to repairs, but I don't really know what worse case is on those.
The worst case is that multiple parts will fail. The single most costly item to replace would be the transaxle since you have to remove the engine and transaxle from the car, so the labor bill will be quite high. No, only the inverter coolant pump is covered under the current LSC. Worst case: the traction battery fails so you invest $1-2K in a salvage unit plus labor. Then the inverter fails so your bill is another $2K in a salvage unit and installation. Finally the transaxle fails so you are out $3K for a salvage unit and installation. And we didn't even include what if the brake actuator pump fails, or the MFD blinks out, etc. Double those numbers if you must rely upon Toyota dealer labor and new parts. Good luck.
I bought my 05 Prius in November with 102,000 miles almost loaded all option but no leather in pretty good shape from a mom and pops dealer in Tampa Fl. for 7000 plus tax tag ..... So I would tell you if you are willing to buy sight unseen do a national Autotrader search Ive been keeping my eyes open for another one with just over 100k and have seen them floating around for high high 7's to low 9's so one with 220k I wouldn't pay more than mid 5's personally. If you have any question feel free to msg me
It was actually $4800 but the story behind why the guy was selling it didn't sit well with me enough to drive 90 minutes out to check it. I did check out an 06 instead but it was ungodly filthy and had a fairly nasty error on the CEL. I am still looking around but the best I see now is a 2007 with 71k, JBL audio (so, not quite base), for $13,500, looks in pristine shape. Pickings are not bad around here for volume but some of the prices are kind of gross.
I just checked out orlando.craigslist.com and if anything the cars are pricier than up here I'm down there in a week, too, if I got a smoking deal I'd drive it back.
From south jersey here, last month I bought an 08 certified with 65K for $14900, they gave me a sweet deal on my jeep, great car, avg mpg over first 6 tanks has been 48mpg, triple my 4cyl wrangler!
Check Autotrader 32822 that is one of the zip codes for Orlando. Everyone is asking a pretty penny but majority of dealers drop there shorts when you start to negotiate.
Nice price for sure. I assume that was not including trade-in for Jeep, just the standalone was $14,900? I'd pay that for an 08 certified now. Oh my word. half of them are at central florida Toyota and its prices are absolutely criminal.
CPO is nice but will probably expire in 1-2 years, mileage irrelevant, because of age of the vehicle. Your price was ok, not great but not the worst I've seen. I can't find any Prius anywhere now within driving distance that I consider acceptable. There is a real premium on these now. I keep looking but have more or less given up on a used Prius until prices come down again. It would take me years to break even at this point.
