I’m the second owner of a 2008 Toyota Prius (Package II) with 23k miles. I have a question about the “key number plateâ€. There is supposed to be a “key number plate†that goes with the two smart keys that needs to be kept in a safe place in case the mechanical key is lost and you want the Toyota dealer to make a new one (p. 35 of the 2008 Owner’s Manual). I did not receive this number plate from the previous owner and I am not sure if I can get in touch with the previous owner. Question: Does anybody know if you can order an extra key when you’ve lost an original and also lost the “key number plateâ€?
The key number plate is only for the mechanical key. You can still order a replacement without one, but better yet, have a spare cut at your local locksmith. The mechanical key is a standard Toyota blank, only it's missing the round end. Use a standard blank to make a spare. Tom
I have a 5 digit number but I am not sure if it is the key number. It seems that the key number would have more digits.
Key numbers have one digit for each tumbler pin. If you have a five pin lock, you have five digits. Each digit tells a locksmith how deep a cut to make for that position on the mechanical key. Tom
